We stopped by our local yesterday and my buddy there showed me what he called an "entry level" DPMS AR-15 carbine. It was ALL flat topped (NO sights!), and had a collapsible stock, but no forward assist. The retail on it was "about" $800 and some change. You can probably find a better deal on it somewhere else.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, we looked at Para's new folder, which had a "real" gas system and a trigger that had to be the lightest AR-15 trigger we've ever tried on a factory rifle!
But MHO (my humble opinion) is to stay away from inexpensive ARs. I know we're all on a budget (including ME!), but two individuals did me a huge favor by steering me away from cheap ARs and advising me to stay with Armalite, DPMS, and Bushmaster. I'm glad we simply saved and bought good equipment.

I liked mine with the EOTECH and folding Yankee Machine co-witness sights, until it got tipped out of my buddies boat a while ago. I got the EBR for $600. Can't get another for that.

Are HBAR Colt's still okay?
Oh wait, I lost that in a tragic boating accident. It's at the bottom of a lake somewhere.
Darn.
