Rescued puppies now Internet stars

Eleven rescued German shepherd puppies and their mother, found without food or water, are getting foster care from a San Diego County couple, and the pups' exploits have been an international Webcam hit.

Following a call from a concerned resident, Riverside County authorities found the mother, Juno, and puppies locked in a backyard in Perris five weeks ago, the day after the puppies were born.

The local couple, volunteers with Southern California German Shepherd Rescue, offered to take care of the animals until the puppies are old enough to be adopted.

The mother was sick and malnourished, said Barbara Cavanaugh of San Diego, a volunteer and fundraiser for the rescue group.

“She was emaciated and full of ticks,” Cavanaugh said. “It was an amazing thing that she gave birth to all of them.”

The foster parents, whose names were not released, decided to show the lively pups on a 24-hour Webcam on UStream, Cavanaugh said. The video has attracted more than 130,000 viewers, including some from the United Kingdom.

Mom and puppies will be at the rescue group's fundraiser, Barktoberfest, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Markim Pet Resort in Carmel Valley.

They will be available for adoption shortly afterward. Adoption applications will be taken at the event; potential owners will be screened to make sure they can provide suitable homes.
