If you're planning on using Facebook for business purposes, forget it.
Facebook is more of a social networking site. And before older FReepers mock it as some teeny-bopper, MySpace knock-off thingy, it's not. I'm in my late 30s and I use Facebook extensively to connect with old friends, relatives, and to meet new people.

I have a facebook account to keep in touch with friends and family. If you were going to do a blog I suppose you could also form a “group”. There are lots of different groups on facebook. You could post your entries as “notes” or shorter ones on the “wall” of the group page. These would be sent to all members of your group.

I am a realtor in Los angeles, and I started a FB page. At first I did hook up with a lot of old friends only, but I have had a couple who have used me to purchase a home. I love Facebook! I do try and keep the politics out of any posts and for a lot of friends I HIDE their liberal nonsense.
I also started a page with my recent sales and listings. About 20 of my friends have become FANS. It’s not much, but every little bit helps.

I have a FB account just to keep in touch with family, friends, and coworkers. One word of caution. There are hackers at work on FB who somehow generate some type of worm infection that gets attached to people’s names and attempts to lure people into clicking onto a link - usually something to do with a video - if you bite your computer becomes infected. Happened to me and it was hell cleaning the infection out of my laptop.

I work for an online retailer. We have a facebook page, we use twitter, and have a youtube channel. Plus we keep a couple blogs (links to those can be found on our website.)

We reach customers through all these mediums. The facebook page is easy...you set up a “page” not a profile, and instead of friends, you have fans. Lots of advertisers on there. Check out the Starbucks page, or adidas, Victorias Secret, Coca-cola...you can name almost any large retailer and you’ll find a page on facebook that they’ve created. They post regular info, updates, and then send out the announcements to their “fans.”

It’s not only companies that have pages. The latest facebook phenom is the Sarah Palin page (only Barack Obama has more fans...she ranks 2nd among politicians.) Just go in and browse pages and you’ll get plenty of ideas and see how other people are using the site.

I get confused about who can see what. I see conversations of friends, but they seem to route from their page to mine. So if I put a comment on my page, does it route to theirs? How do you control that?

Facebook groups are almost useless, unless you like Spam. I got so many invitations and joined so many because I didn’t want hurt anyone’s feelings, that I found myself a member of almost 200 groups! All of these groups send ‘email updates’, so it got to be too much of a hassle sorting out my regular messages from the fluff everyday.

There are too many groups on facebook. Anyone can start a group and that’s why. There are dozens of duplicate groups for the same thing.

One thing I’ve noticed about Facebook... When I joined, my friends posted quite a bit to my wall and I had some great discussions there, but after awhile virtually 70 percent of the noobs get hooked on ‘Mafia Wars’ at some point and then don’t do anything else on the site.

Facebook was taking too much of my time, with Youtube already taking a big chunk of time and all my freeping, I kind of backed-off.

Can’t get into Mafia Wars. I already have too many hobbies.

I didn't have a Facebook page, didn't need one, and only started one so that I could connect to Sarah Palin's Facebook page at: Sarah Palin, where there are 920,044 supporters posting comments, links, and discussions, along with some Freeper acquaintances.

Then I got connected to Michele Bachmann's page, then Glenn Beck's, then Jim DeMint's, then Hannah Giles', then Joe Wilson's, then a bunch of conservative Group pages, etc., etc.

I'm still not too sure about the whole Facebook thing though.

If you want to use it for advertising purposes, do like dawn53 suggested and get a ‘page’ for your company instead of setting up a personal account.

If you want to have a personal account for networking and business-type stuff, forget Facebook and go for LinkedIn instead. LinkedIn is like the professional, business-networking version of Facebook, and it’s clearly aimed at people who want to appear professional so you won’t find silly teens who post too much or annoying chain letters or a lot of spam or anything on it.
