Panic At CBS AS Suits Realize They Are On The Hook For 100s of Millions $ For Letterman The Letch
Friends and fiends at network in NY | MB26

Posted on 10/03/2009 7:53:29 AM PDT by MindBender26

There is panic at Black Rock

Last evening, at an executive-level party attended by some of the Senior Suits from CBS, (and others,) Letterman was the ONLY topic of conversation. There was clearly panic in the air. And old friend/fiend who was there said it was more delicious than the cold Hors’ Dourves and watered down Scotch.

There was no concern for the moral implications of Letterman’s actions, of course. The big worry was about the huge cost of litigation from all the victims of Letterman’s slippery zipper.

When the news of the trouble was first announced, there was about an hour of relief that “Dave” had dodged the bullet and the show/network was safe.

Then the calls from the lawyers started. It didn’t matter whether they were from CBS outside counsel or the victims lawyers; the message was all the same. “It’s goona cost big time.” In Letterman’s pathetic attempt at humor, he had proven all the potential plaintiff’s cases, and turned millions of potential jurors against him.

At first CBS itself thought they were protected by two elements. His staff may actually work for World Wide Pants, Inc, Letterman’s separate, private production company. Sorry, but that will only slow the lawyers down for about 30 minutes. CBS provided the working environment, venue, etc.

CBS IS on the hook for any damages.

Secondly, many liability policies specifically exclude or limit coverage for sexual harassment. No one was willing to talk about that end of it…. but those that knew were not happy.

Bottom line, when all said and done, depending on how many women (and possible men) were involved/victims, CBS will probably write checks in the $100,000,000 range. They cannot afford to let this go to public trial... and therefore any settlement will be for "telephone numbers... with area codes!"

Serves them right!

And Sarah Palin’s book is doing so very well everywhere…..

Why would you accuse A-Rod of cruising high schools? He has been dating old ladies recently but I haven’t heard of him chasing kids.

Because of what Letterman said about Sarah Palin’s daughter and A-Rod.

OK, but that maligned A-Rod as much as the Palins.

Don’t recall anyone sticking up in defense of #13.

“assuming the sex was consensual and not forced under threat of dismissal”

And THAT is the $100,000,000 dollar question.

It’s a HE said/she said, versus an admitted philanderer, who is known to be a yerror to those working around him.

I agree, this is gonna cost CBS, BIG-TIME!

Well, actually, I’m pretty sure the Charles Beard quote is “The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small”, but I like the popular version better.

The nice thing is all of those versions apply nicely to the Letterman/Palin situation.

I’m with you.
Unless these “ladies” were under 18 or Letterman forced himself on any of them, they should not see a payout.

There are NO laws against sleeping with a co-worker. If there was, my husband and I would have been in jail years ago.

Excellent point. I didn’t think about that. I wonder if it could apply to the men as well....

“...what’s happening to our friends at SeeBS.”

If there were any men involved, we might have to start calling it CBiS.

I have no credentials. As you have proven by your reaction to a little humor, most lawyers are nothing but pompous brass dildoes.

If it was intended as humor, I apologize; however, being compared to Star Jones certainly seemed like an insult to me. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. No hard feelings.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that people bash lawyers because they are jealous. Why are they jealous? Because, in general, lawyers are smarter than they are, know more about how the world works than they do and make more money than they do. Just sayin'.

If you can’t prove that people that had sex with Dave were unduly promoted or kept on staff or that people that refused sex with Dave were unduly kept from promotion or fired you really don’t have much. It’s risky having sex with subordinates, because it can be tough to establish a lack of harassment, but it isn’t slam dunk for the other side. In some ways the more underling Dave did the better, it can help establish a pattern, if their career track with Dave looks just like everybody else’s there’s evidence of lack of harassment.

In his testimony to the grand jury, Letterman said, “I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done ... The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show.”

Notice the plural "women".

He thus not only admits he had sex with the one that he was being blackmailed over, but that it was more than just her.

PLUS, his statement generates a pall over the reputations of ALL the women who who currently or ever worked for him, creating an actionable situation for ALL of them.

He has stepped in it BIG TIME.

To me he made it much worse by the lousy jokes he tried to make. If I were one of them and wasn’t upset before after listening to him I’d be mad as all H*LL!
