You paid for your antivirus software? Why?
Good free options have been available for years, mainly from no-name companies. Nervous consumers figure theyre better off buying major brands, like Norton security software from Symantec Corp. Well, heres a major brand for you: Microsoft Corp.

Thanks for the help...
You are welcome
To All:
You can find the free version of AVG on their web site at AVG.com. There is a link there for either the home or business version of it. It has a spyware feature in it as well.
I would also reccomend Malwarebytes also for elimination of items that you sometimes get without it being caught by Zone Alarm and AVG due to your own errors. Malwarebytes also has a free download available too.
These are two of the very best programs I have encounterd in 23+ years of working with computers and techs who have recovered drives that were failing.
I installed the program yesterday. I have a question of my geeky freeper friends: Can I get rid of my antivirus program if I install MSE, or is it meant to supplement an antivirus program? I use Avast’s free antivirus software currently, and it and MSE are running right now. I’d like to free up computer resources if I can, and run only one.
Worth repeating. So much good stuff there with a lot of good information to help you determine what you should get. Also the Hot Finds and Tech Treats there are worth a daily visit. Another good site is Giveaway of the Day.
You might want to at least check to see what your defrag status is ... ;-)
Hey Thanks...looks like another of those sites to bookmark! I’d bet that there is a lot of good information from the members that could be shared. Thanks again...
Try directing the question to others in this link, those with more knowledge on the topic than I.
I've been using Avast for several years. It works great.
Haven't found any reason to switch to the new Microsoft stuff.
Thank you for your help.
In your comment you seem to be saying that problems can happen due to your own errors.
Can you tell me a little more about that - I hope I'm running it correctly...
I switched from AVG to Avast for awhile, but got very annoyed with the damn software flapping it’s gums like a petulant kid, telling me it had upgraded the definitions or whatever. Sometimes I leave my speakers on and I absolutely hate any software that talks without being axed ... so it had to go bye bye.
Back to AVG, which works fine for me, and does NOT slow my machine down at all (quad core with 4 gig ram)
Microsoft Security Essentials 2009=FREE!!!
Microsoft Security Essentials 2012 weekly update=$348.00
Loaf of bread: $3000.
You do know you can turn off the audio on Avast, right? It’s right there in the preferences. I have had both AVG and Avast, and have found Avast to be slightly easier to operate and less intrusive. They are both very good, especially since they are free.
I didn’t know that. Maybe i will download Avast again and see if I can find that preference. Thanks much.
You're very welcome. I should point out while i've gotten some really good software at GAOTD there have been some duds too. I recommend reading the comment section site before downloading any of the giveaways. On a given week there are usually 2-4 worthwhile programs, perhaps 1 or 2 gems, and then some real clunkers. The commentators though are quick to point out good freeware alternatives to the not so great giveaways.
Another site worth checking out for freebies: dotTech
More like a bad locksmith giving you a burglar alarm.
Hey, thanks again... I will say that I have many of those free utilities mentioned at DotTech (most are reviewed at Gizmo) but another good site is always good...
Sounds like you also stay on top of the tech sites...
