The Limits of Charisma: Mr. President, Please Stay Off the TV
Newsweek ^ | September 28, 2009 | Howard Fineman

Posted on 09/28/2009 6:28:16 PM PDT by Moonlighter

If ubiquity were the measure of a presidency, Barack Obama would already be grinning at us from Mount Rushmore...Despite his many words and television appearances, (he) remains more an emblem of change than an agent of it. He's a man with an endless, worthy to-do list, but, as yet, no boxes checked "done." This is a problem that style will not fix. Unless Obama learns to rely less on charm, rhetoric, and good intentions and more on picking his spots and winning in political combat, he's not going to be reelected, let alone enshrined in South Dakota.

The president's problem isn't that he is too visible; it's the lack of content in what he says when he keeps showing up on the tube. Obama can seem a mite too impressed with his own aura, as if his presence on the stage is the Answer. There is, at times, a self-referential (even self-reverential) tone in his big speeches. They are heavily salted with the words "I" and "my." (He used the former 11 times in the first few paragraphs of his address to the U.N. last week.) Obama is a historic figure, but that is the beginning, not the end, of the story.

There is only so much political mileage that can still be had by his reminding the world that he is not George W. Bush...it is starting to sound more like an excuse than an explanation...a president with wavering poll numbers...never much of a legislator...underestimated the complexity...must make his wishes clear...The model is a man whose political effectiveness Obama repeatedly says he admires: Ronald Reagan...Obama seems to think he'll get credit for the breathtaking scope of his ambition...Doing Letterman again won't help. It may boost the host's ratings, Mr. President, but probably not your own.

When Fineman starts talking about what a se-involved, pompous lightweight Obama is, the shininess must have worn off with mainstream America by now. Incompitence can only hide so long.

Two typos by mySELF in a single statement on incompEtence - how ironic! That probably just qualified me for “Spelling Czar” in the Obama Administration. ;0

Fineman and Cohen

maybe it’s a vast left wing conspiracy trying to save their president or maybe some of their own credibility.

Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm
Plese go away

Will the tingles likewise finally crawl out of Chrissy Mathew's leg and up his spine?

Ah, never mind. Clueless Chrissy will never betray his Obama man crush. (And I seriously doubt he even has a spine.)

Knock me over with a feathers....amazing to read this.

Even Fineman knows when too much is too much....

(Am sure he didn’t get the memo and won’t get the White House access now).

It's a little late for Fineman and others in the MSM to save their credibility, much less this hapless presidency.

If I were to ever meet Howard in person I'd ask him point blank why in God's good Name did he and his colleagues do everything in their power to shove this nincompoop down America's throat?!!

Then I'd kick him in the shins.

It took Fineman all this time to see this????

Do you not find it interesting that the MSM is trying to give advice to Obama? They want Obama to succeed so strongly that they are trying to help me. When was the last time that the MSM tried to help a Republican?

LOL! This coming from Fineman too -- who seems to be on MSNBC from 6am to midnight (not counting the late night rebroadcasts).

Guess it takes a media hog to know one.

He won’t compromise and he won’t put his rep on the line. It would be a travesty if he gets something through Congress in such a lazy and inept way.
