Acorns a growing threat in Massachusetts
UPI ^ | Sept. 26, 2009

Massachusetts residents say they are under siege from this year's large crop of acorns as the hard nuts have been falling from trees like rain.

Greg Roberson and Neil McIsaac of Brookline, Mass., said they routinely encounter the nuts as they fall from area oak trees, creating safety hazards while in the air and once on the ground, The Boston Globe reported Saturday.

"Every time I hear one, I think it's a kid throwing a rock at me," Roberson said. "They're falling everywhere."

"I've nearly broken my neck several times," McIsaac offered. "There are tons of them."

What a pity. But you can make flour from acorns. Handy thing to know in these rough times.

If they passed a law against nuts in MA we wouldn't have this problem.

If you know what I mean ...

Generally considered the sign of a bad winter approaching.

So much for Algore Jr.

Same here in New Hampshire. The past couple of weeks, it's sounded like rocks being thrown against the house, all day and all night. The backyard is covered with 'em, slippery as ball bearings.

Turns out it was a great year for other fruit, too. My peach, pear, and cherry trees never had better crops.

A bumper crop here in my yard too. I could make lots of flour!

That is so true. Especially this year.

You might have one hit your car in the Fall in past years. This year it's already happened three times to me.

And yes, the first time you do think it's a rock.

How long before someone blames “global warming/climate change”?

Acorns are plentiful here in Minnesota this yaer too! Last year for the first time in my life, there werwe no acrons in my yard. This year is making up for a lot year. The squirrels and mallards are very happy. I actually keep mu little dog inside when when the ducks arrive to chomp down on the acorns. I would not want to interfere with mother nature’s way of feeding the wild creatures.

My little dog always wants to chase them away, but I won’t let her out until all those dang acorns are nearly gone.

I thought Massachusetts wouldn’t notice having more nuts this year.

The house in which I grew up had a couple of oak trees in the backyard. The squirrels would use me for target practice.

Yes, but the squirrels seem to prefer the shag bark hickory nuts.

Also have a large number of chestnuts this year. Great for attracting whitetail deer!

I looked for an acorn flour recipe.

Quite time consuming. I think I’ll just stick to dehyrating chestnuts this year. But it’s nice to know for future references.

This also means that there will be lot more human-animal incidents involving black bears, deer, and turkey.
