Microsoft has given small system builders the green light to start selling new Windows 7 PCs more than a week before the general launch date of October 22, a Seattle-area computer maker said today.
According to Jon Bach, the president of Puget Systems, several Microsoft representatives have told him that his company, which sells custom PCs nationally out of its Auburn, Wash. facility, can install Windows 7 on new machines, then sell and ship them to customers on October 13.
That date is nine days before the worldwide October 22 launch Microsoft has touted, when Windows 7 upgrades are to go on sale at retail -- and when large computer manufacturers, such as HP and Dell, will start selling systems.

For a small, relatively inexpensive Windows box I bet you could acquire a quite versatile 4GB laptop in the neighborhood of $500-600.
It would probably more than meet your needs for the next couple of years. I've got HP, Dell, Sony and Gateway computers.
Once FreeRepublic perfects their new Facebook and iPhone applications you'll be grateful for the extra processing power.
See? The very two I would not recommend based on my own experience. Shows that tastes and experience vary. ;-)
Thank you for the info. Very much appreciated...
Please ping me to articles about Windows 7 if you see any posted. I’d be interested to read them.
I'm in that situation too.
My family has multiple desktops and notebooks, and while I am tempted to upgrade to Windows 7 as it actually has some interesting features, I have no particular desire to simultaneously upgrade our Diskeeper licenses and possibly some hardware (printers and scanners come to mind) at the moment. Plus, while the HomeGroup feature is tempting, I don't want to end up as an unpaid Microsoft guinea pig, nor do I want to end up with a network that's half-Windows XP Professional and half-Windows 7 (whatever), thus rendering a feature like HomeGroup useless to me.
No, I think I'll just stay with Windows XP Professional but upgrade as systems are eventually retired here.
i like dell.
everyone will say something different.
i got burned by hp. so, i don’t buy their products.
The new little netbooks are good for that. They are small and people seem to like them. For another hundred bucks you get a bigger screen, DVD drive and a bigger hard drive. I have three Toshibas and I really like them all. They work great and two that I bought were $400 - again only a hundred bucks more than a netbook.
Start looking HERE. Read the reviews and look at the features. Take some time to investigate. Good luck.
Where can it be ordered from?
Nevermind; I found it.
For those with .edu addresses, here is the link: http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpus/en_US/DisplayHomePage?resid=@ijUbwoBAiMAABJaUKAAAAAF&rests=1254065927539
Thanks for the link. Very interesting reading people’s comments...
Have you ever watched movies on your laptop?
I don't think there's a Win7-specific ping list yet.
ShadowAce, Swordmaker: Who runs the regular "Windows" ping list? (I assume there is one, though I'm not on it.)
Dr. Scarpetta: In the meantime, you might ask ShadowAce and/or Swordmaker about getting on the "Tech" and/or "Apple" ping lists respectively, since they often have Win7 news.
What happened?
Thanks...
i bought a new hp laptop. it never worked correctly.
the indian techs thought it was software but their fixes never worked.
on warranty, hp took it back 3x for repair.
once the warranty was over, i bought a new dell laptop
and i’m very pleased.
Yes, it works fine. The sound is a bit weak but you can use headphones or external speakers if you want.
I have a Toshiba L305-S5969 that has pretty good sound. Sometimes I have to turn it down when I am watching something and I don't want to disturb my family. I also have an L305-S5962 and that has a weaker sound system but I can use headphones on it.
Thanks for the info...
does the upgrade have an option to
clean install?
Yes, in fact in most cases you'll HAVE to do a fresh install. The only case where an in-place upgrade is allowed is a prior install of Vista. XP->Win7 has to be a fresh install; and any of the Win7-RC pre-releases require a fresh install (although there are alleged workarounds for that case).
Anything older than XP you would want a fresh load anyway.
Best of luck!
dang, $30.
