The map above is a visualization of the contiguous United States, colored by distance to the nearest McDonalds, courtesy of Stephen Von Worley (via Felix Salmon):
For maximum McSparseness, we look westward, towards the deepest, darkest holes in our map: the barren deserts of central Nevada, the arid hills of southeastern Oregon, the rugged wilderness of Idahos Salmon River Mountains, and the conspicuous well of blackness on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota. There, in a patch of rolling grassland, loosely hemmed in by Bismarck, Dickinson, Pierre, and the greater Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis metropolitan area, we find our answer. Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonalds, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!

We dont have Hardees/Carls Junior here
You must be on the East Coast.
No Hardee's/Carl's Jr in Wichita, Kansas Middle America USA, either. No kidding. We used to have Hardee's, but they all closed for some reason including those in surrounding communities. No White Castle here, either, and they started in Wichita if you can believe that.

When they went all pc and got rid of the “transfat” the fries suffered the most. McD’s seems to have gotten it close to original, but they’re all sort of bitter if they’ve cooled down at all.

No White Castle here, either, and they started in Wichita if you can believe that. Holy cow. White Castle HQ is five miles from my house.

“That dark area in West Virginia is interesting. I wonder why that is?”
It’s the one area not covered by the Honorable Grand Wizard Robert Byrd Interstate Highway.

The primary culprit is CANOLA oil and yes it is bitter as Hell and don’t let anybody tell you “you can’t taste the difference”, because anyone with half a taste but can tell you it tastes different. As a matter of fact, if I were elected President, my first Executive Order would be to round up every jackass who made the ridiculous statement and feed them via suppository for the rest of there natural lives.
