Did you just hear Kucinich? {IDIOT}
Posted on 09/23/2009 1:39:57 PM PDT by ignorancerunsrampant
Speaking about the need for health care on Fox Business, he quoted Jesus. He reminded us that Jesus said, ... "when I was hungry, did you feed me? When I was sick, did you care for me?"

So the mythical "separation of Church and State" is only operative when convenient? It's NOT mythical when it's being used to stop Christmas decorations...

"Maybe not! The saying originated from Algernon Sydney in 1698 in an article titled Discourses Concerning Government." Oh, I believe you're right. Franklin (in Poor Richards Almanac) is actually quoting someone else - probably Sydney.

I can just as easily argue that the Obama plan will prevent me from following those commands by giving the power to the State and not allowing me as an individual to live up to the ideal behavior Jesus commands.
I agree. It would be like saying the victims of Robin Hood were very giving and charitable because they were forced to relinquish their valuables which were, in turn, given to the poor. They involunatarily fed the poor, not much virtue in that.

I don’t think Jesus was addressing the Roman government when he said this . . . big difference.

But I do agree that Kucinich is quoting Jesus way out of the original context. Jesus wasn't banging on Herod's door demanding that he (as the "government") feed, clothe, and heal everyone in his realm. Nor was he harassing Roman authorities over the issue. That has never been the role of Government.
My own church just helped my family with a very large insurance-not-covered health bill. THAT's the context.

You're not supposed to ignore the second part of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.

I don’t remember ever seeing that in scripture, although God did say....if a man won’t work he won’t eat.

2 Thess. 3:10-15 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." 11We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. 13And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. 14If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. 15Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.

Jesus did not say, “When I was hungry, did you shake down your neighbors to feed me?” “When I was thirsty, did you force fellow citizens to provide for me under threat of prison?”
Personal charity and extorting money from hardworking taxpayers are two entirely different things.
