New Jersey homeowners put 7 percent of their paychecks toward property taxes in 2008 — the highest in the country, a tax group said today.
The state, with the highest property taxes in the nation, is home to six of the nation’s 10 most expensive counties, according the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit group that analyzed Census data released this week. But this year’s list was better for New Jersey than 2007, when the state claimed seven of the top 10 spots.

I know fools who moved from NJ to NC (poor natives in NC) and they do not see the connection with the Dem Party and the destruction of NJ.
They are like locust and drag their ignorance to another state to destroy it.
I had a Texas state rep. in my business the other day tell me it was Texas.
Texas does have fairly high property taxes. 2/3rds of which is designated for school taxes. There is no state income tax.
The top 10 counties in median real estate taxes as a percentage of median home value for 2008 are all from the state of New York. LINK
We also come in number 49 in the state freedom index. I have no reason to stay except for family.
In rural Alaska, no prop taxes. With no organized local govt, not many services; most importantly; no law enforcement; alot more freedom. Hasn’t been a murder in 25 years.
I only get a retirement pension and SS, and I live in Texas.
As you said, we don’t have a State income tax. However, my property taxes for City, County, ISD and Hospitals is almost TWELVE PERCENT of my income!
With the burst of the housing bubble, foreclosures, loss of property value, etc., one would think that my taxes would go down. .....Didn’t happen! The new appraisal RAISED my property value so they can suck in more in tax revenue.

The same outrage here in Marion County(Ocala) Florida.
Taxes on non homestead property, vacant lots, commercial property, in many cases has more than TRIPLED in 4 years!
And the county still wont reduce tax assessments, even though fair market value, has plunged at least 30 percent since the real estate bubble popped in 2006.
Lots of mom and pop business, especially fish camps that are assessed at inflated, waterfront, prices are being taxed into bankruptcy.
NJ may have a higher tax rate but in Florida, the local tax mafias raise your taxable value of your property, far above the market value with impunity, to get what they want to keep their greedy scam going.
It is not Washington that is most dangerous to your well being, it is the “public serpents” in the county tax mafias!
Alaska in my top five “escape” states.
NJ has high property taxes, state income tax, and they raised the sales tax from 6% to 7% a few years back.
