John Edwards Promised to Wed Mistress; Dave Matthews to Play Ceremony

Monday – September 21, 2009

11:51am

John Edwards promised mistress Rielle Hunter that he'd marry her once his wife Elizabeth died of cancer, Edwards' former aide alleges in a shocking new book proposal.

According to a copy obtained by the New York Times, Andrew Young claims Edwards told Hunter that the ceremony would take place on a New York rooftop and feature an appearance by the Dave Matthews Band.

Holy crap, this fall from grace rivals OJ Simpson’s 1994 fall in its speed and completeness.

May Elizabeth have a long and useful life ... of her own aside from this miserable politician husband.

Amen. I wonder how much life insurance he has on Elizabeth.

Edwards seems to organize his life around the expectation that his wife would die soon.

Dude, what about Nuge?

I'd go for that. I never said I would want Ozzie Osbourne to play at my wedding. I just said I would prefer him to Dave Matthews.

From the Beggars Opera:

The middle-class criminal complacency of these two is shattered by their discovery that their daughter Polly has secretly married Macheath, the famous highwayman. Peachum’s famous objection:

Do you think your Mother and I should have liv’d comfortably so long together if ever we had been married?

is seconded by Mrs. Peachum’s:

Can you support the Expence of a Husband, Hussy, in Gaming, Drinking and Whoring? Have you Money enough to carry on the daily Quarrels of Man and Wife about who shall squander most? There are not many Husbands and Wives, who can bear the Charges of plaguing one another in a handsome way.

The parents conclude, however, that the match may make sense, provided the husband can be killed for his money. They depart, intent on this errand, and we find that Polly has hidden her man on the premises. She informs him of his danger, and there follows a touching duet, in spite of its intentional burlesque of popular love scenes:

MACHEATH. And I would love you all the Day,
POLLY. Every Night would kiss and play,
MACHEATH. If with me you’d fondly stray
POLLY. Over the Hills and far away.

LUCY LOCKIT: You base Man you,——how can you look me in the Face after what hath passed between us?—— See here, perfidious Wretch, how I am forc’d to bear about the Load of Infamy you have laid upon me——O Macheath! thou hast robb’d me of my Quiet——to see thee tortur’d would give me Pleasure.

Macheath succeeds in mollifying her, only to have Polly drop in at this inopportune moment, nearly ruining his chances of escape by claiming him for her husband in Lucy’s presence. Macheath finds himself forced to pretend that Polly is crazy, and succeeds in forcing her to retreat—but something in the performance fills Lucy with foreboding: “But that Polly runs in my Head strangely.” And she sings, affectingly:

If love be not his Guide,
He never will come back!

There would be, as the Beggar promised, difficulty choosing between the two young women, but for Lucy’s capacity for violence and revenge. Macheath notices, and this would be fatal to her cause, were it not lost already:

LUCY. How happy I am, if you say this from your heart! For I love thee so, that I could sooner bear to see thee hang’d than in the Arms of another.

MACHEATH. But could’st thou bear to see me hang’d?

Some literature for the day. I suspect Elizabeth and Rielle both could bear to see John Edwards hang’d.

parsy, who says there is nothing new under the sun

Shouldn’t the Dave Matthews Band have been banned from high places?

"He’s a private citizen now and forever more. Who care anymore?"

I care. He has money, probably some residual ambition, and a supplicant media who bought him hook, line and sinker before this scandal. Question his character? Why, of course not!

As far as I am concerned he is like Elliot Spitzer. You cannot pour enough cement over his political grave to be sure he doesn't come back to haunt us. On FNC last night, on Geraldo Rivera's show there was some allusion to sex tapes which may exist. It seem plausible since Hunter was a "videographer", and between the two of them are few if any scruples. If they exist and some TMZ like media outlet is going after them - I say keep it coming, you can never be too sure that the guy's political career (and his lecturing America) is over.

This was one of the most disgusting things I ever read. I thought Hillary & Obama were the worst out of the three Dems but this guy is a worm.

“Dave Matthews” play. LOL! I loathe Dave Matthews band crappy music and he is a lib too. He is so incredibly lame. Like Hootie & The Blowfish or something just garbage.

Rielle Hunter (or whatever the h*ll her name is) has bad taste in music and worms...er I mean “men.”

What else is he capable of? Well, I expect we’ll see him selling the calendar where he’s been marking off the days on eBay right after she dies.

That’s horrible. Who would want Dave Matthews performing at their wedding.

Agreed. I can think of at least a dozen bands instead of them. Trouble is, my bride would probably put a veto on each one...

Spyrogyra...Doobie Brothers...Steely Dan...Jethro Tull...Marshal Tucker...Yes...Allman Brothers...Little River Band...Poco...to name a few.
