It happened anyway.

IIRC, if there had been vote in the US House on Dec 6, 1941 for a declaration of war, it would have lost by a significant margin.

If Hitler hadn't foolishly declared war on the USA I've often wondered if FDR would have been able to sell a declaration of war on Germany in the wake of Pearl Harbor.

Good question.

After Pearl Harbor, it maybe could be said that the American Electorate took the view, “Kill them all and let God sort it out later.” I don’t recall seeing a lot debate on the distinction between the Nazis and the Japanese.

I don’t want war! All I want is peace...peace...peace...!
A little piece of Poland,
A little piece of France,
A little piece of Austria
And Hungary, perchance!
A little slice of Turkey
And all that that entails,
And then a bit of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales!

I think it was a moot point, as we definitely would have stepped up supplies to Britain, and once a US ship was sunk by a U-Boat, it wouldn’t have been a very hard sell.

Most of the opposition came from within Churchill’s own Conservative Party, they tried many times to boot him out of the Party because of his hawkish views towards Hitler.

Yeah I think simply using the Britain is our ally against Japan and Germany is the enemy of our ally would have been sufficient grounds.

Sure the Rats were opposed, until Hitler invaded their beloved Soviet Union.

My sister is a huge Mel Brooks fan and that's her favorite one of his movies.

Against the wishes of both Republicans and Democrats shown in the poling results here, Rosevelts Lend -Lease, Arsenal of Democracy, convoying, etc had led by April of 1941 to an active naval war between us and Germany. The German declaration of war merely acknowledged reality.

True. The US navy was for all practicable purposes already fighting the U-boats in the Atlantic.

The 3.7” AA gun of Great Britain was considered by the Germans to be comparable , if not superior, to the 88.

British Army requests in North Africa for assignment of 3.7s to the Army for anti-tank duty were refused on the grounds that the 3.7 was designed to shoot down aircraft, and that was what it would be used for. Captured 3.7s were used by the Germans - to kill tanks.

Interesting claim by the Brits that the target of a Sept. 4th air raid at Kiel was the ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE. Especially since she’d been at sea since August 23rd. I assume the target was the ADMIRAL SCHEER?

Wasn't the German 88mm originally for AA and then was discovered to be an ideal anti-tank weapon?

Yep. The question is when the Germans made the discovery. Some say Spain. Others opt for the battle of Arras in 1940, when the British counterattacked with Matilda or Crusader tanks [which may have contributed to the Dunkirk stop order]. When they hit 7th Panzer and SS TOTENKOPF, the German AT guns [37 mm] couldn't stop them. Rommel then used a screen of 88s to chop them into dog food [shades of things to come].

What many don't realize is that early in the war 88 guns with German ground forces were manned by Luftwaffe personnel [all 88s were part of the Luftwaffe]. It wasn't ‘til '42[?] that the Army got control of some of them. And by then the Army was developing the PAK 43 and a whole series of 88s for use in armored vehicles.

"a farmer...was sentenced to death and permanent loss of his civil rights"...

yes, that makes sense.

Such a mistake is easily understood. The appearance of the two was similar.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_pocket_battleship_Admiral_Scheer
His wartime career began on 4 September 1939 when RAF Bristol Blenheim bombers attacked him at Wilhelmshaven. He was hit by three bombs, which failed to cause major damage, and flak downed four of the attackers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_pocket_battleship_Admiral_Graf_Spee
Prior to the invasion of Poland plans were made to deploy the Panzerschiffe as raiders in the Atlantic Ocean. Admiral Graf Spee sailed from Wilhelmshaven on 21 August 1939, to act as a commerce raider in the South Atlantic.[8]

Yeah, the ads are interesting. For instance, the Hotel St. George advertises "steam rooms, gym, and gay social events."
