What unit was he in? My dad was in an engineering unit, 109th Combat Engineers, attached to the old 34th ID, 'the Red Bull'.
Once you've smelled a dead human, you don't ever forget it. (I used to be an arson investigator).
Did the police come up with a body?

Doesn't necessarily mean the shark(s) killed himOh sure. Defend the shark. It was a victim and was egg'd on by the swimmer. Darn bleeding heart! (just kidding, I hope you know).

My dad was in artillary, (forward observer, radioman) he was attached to 5th army in Italy. Once in France/Germany he was in one of Pattons units.
Their logo had a rhino on it. Can't remember the unit.
Yes, they found a body, in pretty advanced decay.

Was this guy drinking? Teribly poor judgement cost him everything. Swimming at night in the ocean is a very bad idea.

My dad joined in with, was it the 101rst that marched up the boot of Italy.

101st first action was Normandy. I dont think they had any action in Italy. The 5th Army under Mark Clark did most of the fighting in Italy.

I took my yellow lab swimming in the Mullica River two weeks ago. Last week a 8 ft bull shark was caught in the mouth of the river.

Yikes! I'm glad your dad made it back o.k. FO is not a low-risk job!

The British 1st Armored Division had a rhino as their badge. I don't recall an American Armored group that did, but nobody in our family has been cavalry or armored since the Civil War, so what do I know?

Then it was the fifth army. I forgot. He had funny stories about his time there as an underaged kid with all the grizzled old guys out of the African front.

I can’t recall the last shark attack we had in NM. You folks have all the luck.
Of course, Gila monster bites are nasti.

The blues come from the deep to shallow water during dark times. Bulls are in the surf all the time. Most attacks are people blundering into Bulls. However, some say Blues during the night are more dangerous. I am in that school.

Bulls are the only sharks that are happy in fresh water. Their young grow in estuaries. Bulls feed where fresh water enters into salt. So I would avoid swimming in the mouth of the Mullica, the Maurice and the Cohansey!

Nobody seems to know, but the fool on the hill.
