There is a lot of technique to proper spanking and it should never leave a bruise (the purpose of spanking is to awaken the senses not to administer punishment--so says an ex-girlfriend).A little bit of online research will reveal the existence of a large community of enthusiastic "spankees." Most of whom are, or at least claim to be, female.
While many apparently agree with your girlfriend, others are into "domestic discipline," and seem to get more of a charge out of the idea of being "punished," than out of the physical sensation itself, to the point that when a punishment session isn't called for they will intentionally do something that makes it necessary. A good many aren't happy unless bruises or welts are left behind.
It appears there is a great deal of variety in what floats a person's boat.
