dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 17 September 2009 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

logorrhea \law-guh-REE-uh\, noun
1. Pathologically incoherent, repetitious speech.
2. Incessant or compulsive talkativeness; wearisome volubility.

Example sentences:

By his own measure, he is a man of many contradictions, beginning with the fact that he is famous as a listener but suffers from "a touch of logorrhea." He is so voluble that one wonders how his subjects get a word in edgewise.
-- Mel Gussow, "Listener, Talker, Now Literary Lion: It's Official.", New York Times, June 17, 1997

It's also not good if your date has logorrhea.
-- Monte Williams, "8 Minutes in the Life of a Jewish Single: Not Attracted? Next!", New York Times, March 5, 2000

Mr. King, who possesses an enviable superabundance of imagination, suffers from a less enviable logorrhea.
-- Michele Slung, "Scare Tactics.", New York Times, May 10, 1981

Etymology:
Logorrhea is derived from Greek logos, "word" + rhein, "to flow."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

A+ for you. I had two deer, a doe and her fawn, cross in front of me on the rainy trails this morning.

Fingers crossed for the drying out.

The other day one of Jax’ friends called and asked if Jax could come over to her grandfather’s store. When I got the expected whining for saying NO my response to her WHY was to just point out the window.

She understood the pointing finger :)

Unless it is an absolute necessity, I do not drive in the rain and I sure as heck wasn’t going to do it in the pickup because while my car was back running, it still wasn’t legal, and I’ve never driven the PU.

That is so cool! The herd that my neighbors and I feed numbers 12-14, and acts more like a herd of goats-following our vehicles when we get home, tame enough to touch and stealing veggies and fruit out of your truck or car if you leave it open after you have been grocery shopping. I forgot about that last Friday, and left the hatch of my car open while I took in the first load of groceries-when I came back out, a trio of does had dragged out a bunch of spinach and a 5 lb. bag of potatoes and were chomping away.

That is TOO funny!!!!!

The deer around here steer pretty clear of the house itself, but we often watch them crossing the road while heading into or out of the woods. They drive the dog absolutely nuts. The cats pay them no never mind, but the dog goes totally ballistic.

Thankfully, Joe Wilson had the gumption to interrupt the President’s logorrhea.

It was 48 years ago. What we loved about it was the self-referential aspect of it - a logorrheaic definition of logorrhea.

Apparently, the logorrhea of the Congress was not going to slow down the passing of both the Senate and now the House to stop all payments to ACORN. There was enough logorrhea from the ACORN babes to last an eternity....or to a ratings bonanza.
