Man Attacked by Bobcat

Story Updated: Sep 14, 2009 at 5:23 PM CDT

It's been confirmed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources that the animal that attacked a Hermantown man over the weekend was almost certainly a bobcat.

Gary Lucia was attacked in his garage by a bobcat while trying to defend his pet ducks and geese.

Lucia has set up several traps in the woods around Lucia's house to prevent the animal from returning to do any more damage.

Bobcats are fairly common in the Northland but rarely attack people.

The nocturnal cats are about two times the size of an average house cat.

They have large paws and short tails and can weigh up to 45 pounds.

Cloquet DNR Wildlife expert Rich Staffon gave some advice on how to avoid injury if you come in contact with a bobcat.

Are they sure it wasn't this bobcat?

Twice the size of a house cat? How many 22.5 lb house cats have you seen lately? Plus a 22 pound cat would be fat, a Bob cat is heavily muscled and stronger pound for pound than a house cat. One could easily kill a human if it had a mind to, but lucky for us they tend to attack animals smaller than they are.

Yeah, you’re right. There was a reason. Lucia was preventing the cat from his supper.

Once again the same elixir applies: Big-ass dog, big-ass gun. I dunno why this is so hard for folks to understand.

We have windows separating the outside bobcats from our inside cats...:^)

The bobcat knows a nice, juicy meal when she sees it...:^)

Problem is the piss water the Cat drinks.

A good Deshutes or Widmer Ale would have that cat top hat.

Heh. Or a welder's glove and a cheese grater... The point being that the big dog would have changed the dynamic completely without getting one's fingernails dirty... The big gun is just in case there is a female dog in heat down the block... :D

I’ve heard of Canadian Lynx getting to 45 lbs but not bobcats. Around here a really large bc would be 32 lbs. Still that is a lot of fighting power.
