Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

Prayers for his family. He was very talented and IMO -underrated as an actor. If you've never seen "City of Joy" see it. Loved "Dirty Dancing" "North and South", "Red Dawn" and "Point Break" and I know there are probably more.

I heard an interview with Barbara Walters about just how much of a fight he put up against the cancer- he was making a TV show and would be quite ill from the treatments, but, never let on how he was feeling- always had a smile.

While terribly sad that he's passed- it was nice to hear that his family was gathered around him for his last moments. RIP Patrick Swayze.

Wonder if the show will dissolve because of his death.

It was stated in another article (can't remember which) that the second season was canceled reluctantly by the studios because of his poor health.

Agreed. He played a very game and effective straight man. I don’t know much about how he lived his life, but the fact that he was generally unknown to me in that respect is a positive thing.

I too laughed for hours at that one. If you recall, they were alternating dancing, and then Chris Farley just took over the last section of that sketch, and all Swayze could do was just sit and watch in humorous amazement!

That’s a shame because it was one of the few television shows we watched. His shoes would be very hard to fill and the studio obviously knew it. May he RIP.

Definitely, he was a great person inside and out. Hard to find people like him (especially in show business). He will be missed.

RIP Patrick..
