I love the article about the Russians being concerned about the German advance. Poland’s fate via Russia had already been written.

That little piece at the end of page 14 about a 1934 Soviet-Nazi deal was most intriguing.

Checking out the caption under the photo in your post:

"SS Peacekeepers protect German civilians from Jewish attacks"

Looks like the NYT buys into any enemy propaganda no matter what era it comes from.

G.H. Archambault has settled in to the job of reporting on the war in the west. A couple excerpts from page 7:

"Our aviation has been active in correlation with the land actions." (Translation - We are flying around as well as walking around.)

"A brilliant attack by one of our divisions insured the possession of an important rise of ground."

An interesting note from Churchill. On the one hand, he gets bogged down in trivial details, like pestering the Prime Minister about the location of two lost 18” howitzers of 1918 vintage.

On the other hand, he shows a broader perspective of the “big picture.” He suspends construction on all capital ships except the three or four currently under construction (King George V, Prince of Wales, Duke of York, and probably Anson or Howe). Instead, he emphasizes that Britain’s naval yards need to produce smaller sub-chasers. Churchill knows he is in a race with the Germans; will the Germans produce enough U-boats to strangle Britian, or will the British stay ahead of them by producing enough sub chasers to keep the U boats at bay?

It will be a very close-run race through early 1943, when finally during “Black May” the combination of experienced skippers and crews and technological improvements wins the Battle of the Atlantic. This decision by Churchill, this early in the war, probably paid the dividends later that made the difference.

Edward Beattie, the UPI Staff Correspondent in Bucharest, is on crack. He says the main Polish force has not yet been engaged, their retreat to prepared positions is deliberate and orderly, and their army is intact.

Instead, the 12 divisions of Poznan and Pomorze Groups that will start the Battle of the Bzura River today are all that’s left of the Polish Army. The rest has been herded into the cities or has been swept away.

The bit about the Russians being “concerned” about the German advance is pretty funny. It makes a nice pretext to execute the Partition of Poland they’ve already agreed to. But they could well be “concerned” for other reasons, and those will turn out to be pretty good reasons in a little less than two years.

Here is another good one. Compare the map from the Sept. 5 issue (page 13, 'Contact' in West) with the map today at page 8 captioned "French Moving Forward on Western Line." After 5 days it is clear that the French are moving forward verrrrry cautiously.

The French are meeting serious resistance from booby traps and propaganda sound trucks. It’s stopping them in their tracks, except for the really important small rise of ground they managed to take after a hard and bitter stroll up to it.
