When mom is away, most dads offer a crying newborn a bottle of milk, a pacifier, a pinkie finger. But a Swedish dad is embarking on an experiment that he hopes will allow him to soothe a baby with his own milk-filled breasts.
Ragnar Bengtsson, a 26-year-old student at Stockholm University, is regularly breaking out a breast pump to induce lactation. Bengtsson is the father of a 2-year-old child, but he has no plans to nurse his toddler. Rather he wants to breast-feed future children and inspire other dads to offer their breasts as a way to bond with their children at earlier stages of development.
"Anything that doesn't do any harm is worth trying out. And if it works it could prove very important for men's ability to get much closer to their children at an early stage," Bengtsson told The Local, an English newspaper in Sweden.
The story was major headline news in the Nordic country, and now it's making the rounds on all the parenting blogs. The story will probably continue to escalate as Bengtsson's efforts will be documented by Swedish TV8. Also, he maintains a blog on the station's Web site.

As I learned in the breast-feeding part of the baby classes my wife and I had to take through our midwives, it IS technically possible for men to lactate and nurse a baby.
But really, “can” doesn’t always mean “ought.”
Bingo. Short of your infant child starving to death due to no money/access to formula, no availability of a wet nurse, and a dead or otherwise unavailable mom. Perhaps that is why they are “able” but, the likelihood of ever needing to, well, are probably so miniscule as to border on my chances of winning the powerball.....
Ping
Certainly made me a little queasy.
Didn’t these people used to be vikings, the terror of Europe and beyond? What the hell happened?
Socialism
Oh now thats gonna work REAL well.
Maybe Obama should try breastfeeding NANCY PELOSI... THAT WOULD BE WORTH PAYING FOR!
I’d pay to NOT see that.
Behaving stupidly.
Under section 4 of the 1995 [Swedish] Parental Leave Act women employees are entitled to time off to breastfeed their children. They are also entitled to be transferred to other work where this is possible.
Please send me a check for $1000, and I won’t show the pic to you.
Not a good example. You see, some men might actually play the powerball...
I’d like to disagree with that. Or at least, I’d like to disagree with the proposition that that doesn’t do any harm. That is just...disturbing.
Take no offense grizzled :), but some men apparently actually breast feed as well........
