India: Where Christians Are A Target For The Religious Murder Mobs

Rhys Blakely in Bhubaneswar

Namrata, a young Christian villager who was injured in an attack by a Hindu mob.

The mob appeared an hour after sunset, armed with axes, clubs and paraffin. The carnage that followed would have been much worse if the Christians of Gadragaon, a remote village in northeast India, had not been warned by text message: “The Hindus are coming to kill you.”

The alert gave most enough time to flee to the jungle, where 114 of them would hide for a week, drinking rainwater and foraging for food.

But the warning did not come early enough for those unable to run. “They doused him with petrol and taunted him; we could hear him screaming,” said Ravindra Nath Prahan, 45, of his paralysed brother, Rasananda, 35, who was burnt alive by Hindu fanatics. “I could have tried to save him. But we had to save ourselves.”

The attack on Gadragaon, by a mob that chanted “Hail Mother India” as they razed the village, was among the first of the grim litany of atrocities committed against minority Christians in the state of Orissa over the past two weeks. The Vatican has called the wave of violence “a sin against God and humanity”.

A nun has been gang-raped; a worker at a church-run orphanage burnt alive. In the Kandhamal district, the site of the worst attacks, Kamalini Naik, who was seven months pregnant, was ordered to denounce Christianity and convert to Hinduism by a baying mob. When she refused, she and her one-year-old son were “cut into pieces”, witnesses said.

A lot of these people (the Hindus) are stirred up by local political forces who feel threatened by Christianity. That doesn’t make it any better, but it explains why India seems to tolerate this in so many districts.

North-East. Figures.

These are parts of India that have seen violence for centuries.

Forest-villages with aboriginal tribals, swinging allegiances based on which conversion group comes with the largest bounty. Barely Hindu, barely Christian.

This has been going on since the British were there, during WW2. The "Hindu" groups are the RSS factions, and the "Christian" groups include the NLFT, among others. Both mindlessly cruel and brutal.

NLFT = National Front of Tripura. That’s far away from ORissa. The violence in Orissa is pretty much one sided on the part of the RSS

Oh, I’m sorry, I hadn’t noticed that.

The tribal areas in all of the Subcontinent have always been sore spots. From what I can reckon, this Kandhamal area fits the same description: Switching alliances causing intra- and inter-, tribal friction.

This is actually a caste war over Affirmative action benefits

India has separate Affirmative action quotas for
Forest Tribals ( read Amerinds ) and for
Dalits ( read blacks )

The land of the Forest tribals cant be taken away or sold
to non-tribals, just as Amerind lands are protected

The Dalit Panos converted enmasse to xtianity
and still declared to the govt that they are hindus
Only hindu Untouchables get quota, since xtianity does not have Untouchability

So first the Dalit xtian Panos cheated the quota of hindu dalits

Then they wanted to grab the lands of the Kandh hindu forest tribals
They bribed officials and got themselves labeled as tribals
and stole the quota and lands of the Forest tribals

All the maoists are xtians and the Panos hired maoist hitmen to kill the religious leader of the forest tribals
at which point, the long suffering Kandh tribals took revenge

All the maoists are xtians

Utterly false -- you have any proof for your statement?

and the Panos hired maoist hitmen to kill the religious leader of the forest tribals

Utterly false again -- what ARE you smoking?

The Kandh tribals aren't Hindus -- they're animists who worship nature, not Hindu deities.
