CNN Uses Pro-Communist American to Tout Cuban Health Care

There’s something deeply wrong with journalism that scrutinizes and criticizes the institutions of free and successful nations, but produces puff pieces on the supposed achievements of totalitarian dictatorships. On Thursday, CNN aired a piece of Communist Party propaganda about how Cuba could serve as “a model for health care reform” in the United States, complete with an authoritative sound bite from an American medical expert, identified only as someone “who’s lived and worked in Cuba for decades.”

But the expert, Gail Reed, is a longtime admirer of the Cuban revolution, married to the Cuban official who served as ambassador to Grenada in the early 1980s when U.S. troops liberated the island from hardline communists who had executed the leftist Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. She's also worked at Granma, Cuba’s official communist party newspaper.

As for Reed, she was profiled in the Miami Herald back in 1983 after she and her husband returned to Cuba after American forces liberated Grenada. She talked about the fear she felt at seeing U.S. Marines surrounding the Cuban embassy, and told the newspaper, “I feel I have a very strong identification with the Cuban revolution.”

“When I first came to Cuba in the ’70s, I was very impressed with their efforts in building a new kind of society,” Reed explained.

Now is when we must be the most vocal and resolute.

This clown thinks that “Hey, with my charisma, I can go directly to the people via forcing the networks to cover this (not like they wouldn’t ANYWAY) and make my case, we will get this thing passed...”

What he doesn’t know is that this situation is exactly analagous to the Dogfood Story.

There was company that made dogfood. It was a very competitive industry, and the new CEO came in ready to kick ass and take names in the dogfood industry. He started a new campaign, reformulated the dogfood so that it would cost less and he could undercut his competitors and spend more on advertising. They hired a famous musician to write a jingle, they had the most handsome and beautiful dogs gracing the front of the bags, there was no stone left unturned.

But sales did not take off. In fact, sales began to fall in spite of all the work. The CEO called a meeting:

CEO: Okay. We have spent all this money on advertising. We bought time on Oprah because she loves dogs. We advertise in all the dog magazines. We set up booths at the national dog show, and staffed it with beautiful women in skimpy clothes. Our dogfood is cheaper than our competitors. WHY ARE SALES DOWN? (Pounds fist on table)

EXECUTIVE 1: Sir, we have been taking surveys from dog-owners, and have even been paying them to participate, and...

CEO: DAMN IT! We have done this by the book, we should be wiping the floors with our competitors! All you have done is SURVEYS?

EXECUTIVE 1: W...well...uhh...we...ahh...have been doing some preliminary studies after the intitial feedback from the owners, and it turns out that...

CEO: WHAT? WHAT? GET RID OF HIM! YOU’RE FIRED! YOU! (Points at another business-suited man) Get the marbles out of your mouth. What are you guys DOING?

EXECUTIVE 2: Well sir, based on the owner satisfaction surveys, we bought over a hundred dogs in to do a taste test, and...

CEO: A taste test? What on earth for? It is dog food! Well, what “oh so important” information did you get out of THAT waste of money?

EXECUTIVE 2: Ummm...they wouldn’t eat it. The dogs don’t like the dog food.
