dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 2 September 2009 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

doppelganger \ˈdä-pəl-ˌgaŋ-ər, -ˌgeŋ-, ˌdä-pəl-ˈ\ • noun
1 : a ghostly counterpart of a living person
2 a : double b : alter ego c : a person who has the same name as another

Example sentence:
If anyone watches Monk, they know Randy was fixated on the doppelganger phenomena when he saw a picture of Frankie DePalma.

Etymology:
German Doppelgänger, from doppel- double + -gänger goer

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Thank you! I’m so delighted to see the Fox coverage on the parental outrage over his “speech” to the kids, and all the opting out by the parents who don’t want their kids to become Hitler Youth clones-”Hey, teachers-leave those kids alone”! (And yes, that is my favorite Pink Floyd song).

The communist green czar shouldn’t be calling other people a**holes-he’s the biggest one around right now-and I don’t believe for one minute that he regrets his bad manners no matter what he says...

You should see the corresponding “lesson plan” for grades 7-12. Instead of asking how they intend to reach their goals of continuing and finishing their education, they want to know what 3 words from zero’s speech made the biggest impression on them. So they want to use our children as an unpaid focus group. I have to ask again. WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE???

Steyn suggested they say “That’s all folks”. I haven’t contacted my school yet to see what they plan to do.

I’m not surprised-they never pay for anything unless they have to-they expect everyone else to.

My neighbor who has three kids at home, ages 11, 15 and 16 told me that she had called the school district out here and was told that the district was probably not going to participate in the little show-she was promised a call no later than tomorrow, so that if the indoctrination speech was to be shown, she could keep the two oldest kids home (her 11 year old is still in private school). More than 50% of the kids out here, especially those under 15 or so are either in private schools, cottage schools or home schooled.

We used private schools in SA. The publics were not safe. That should be primary.
