But amid the breathtaking views, she noticed a glaring omission. Under the pristine blue skies, there were hardly any people of color.
"At Yellowstone, it occurred to me -- how come there are no black people around?" Peterman said.
Why? she wondered. Why weren't they enjoying the parks they helped create, the public lands that belonged to them as well? Peterman embarked on a crusade to address the problem.

"A 400-year-old legacy of slavery was reinforced by the post-Civil War and Great Depression migration of African-Americans to urban areas. Jim Crow laws restricted their movements, while acts of violence were often perpetrated against blacks in remote wooded areas. Blacks found safety in their own homes, behind locked doors. Asians and Latinos, too, live with a history of forced labor outside. They might avoid certain areas because of perceived discrimination," Roberts said. "Outdoor spaces are not places of refuge for minority communities."
I don't know about you, but when I go outside, to a park or other recreation area, the first thing that usually goes through my mind is: "we need more people of color here." True story.
Now that I think of it—I don’t remember seeing too many of them at the sailing regatta either.
What does this have to do with anything at all? Are they saying parks are segregated? LOL
I guess this is as looney as Libertarians discussing issues with the post office while Obummer and his thugs try to take over the health care system.
Black people have the same God-given right to freedom of association as anyone else.
But liberals evidently believe they should be bussed into Yellowstone Park against their will.
Well, obviously, quotas are necessary. This could easily be handled with a new mandatory busing program.
They shy away from chess matches because you see, with the slavery and the uh.. the Jim Crow and ..er.. but the Buffalo soldiers and Iron Eyes Cody invented chess actually, but...you see.. uh.. never mind
Y’know, the last time I looked at Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point, the first thought that ran through my mind was
“Wow, this is beautiful.”
For some reason, it wasn’t
“As a Latina, I am uncomfortable here because a bunch of people who I don’t know, don’t agree with politically, and have no connection with in general, but have the same skin color as me, spent a lot of time outside picking grapes. I’m going to go inside and lock the door, where I’ll feel safe.”
Maybe I’m just weird that way.
That’s why I’m a small l libertarian.
Frankly, I think the Libertarian Party is obsessed with attracting as many Democrats as possible. They play up their anti-war, anti-law enforcement rhetoric, and rarely talk about defending free-market economics or the Second Amendment. Some of the more extreme Libertarians have embraced 9/11 Troofery and Holocaust denial. Despicable, but good ways to recruit Democrats.
What a racist article What POS!
Some of us paleskins don’t like sharing space with bears, snakes or mosquitoes either, never mind dealing with the lack of civilized plumbing.
Any statistics on Asians, fair-skinned redheads and Island-born peoples as park tourists/campers?
Maybe not liking open spaces has to do with a life spent dodging stray bullets?
Not high, just brainwashed. She’s been taught from before preschool that race matters more than anything else, and that everything must be looked at through the lens of race.
I feel sorry for her. Mentally, she’s trapped herself in a box - the box of politically correct thought - and is unwilling to think outside of it.
200 years ago, plantation overseers put shackles on black people. Now, blacks put shackles on themselves.
“Thats why Im a small l libertarian.”
Me too. Milton Friedman is my idol... common sense with the looney stuff left out.
You know....with all the problems in this country and this world....THIS is what you feel the need to crusade for? Having more minorities in parks?
Yawn
Oh, good Lord what claptrap.
These people cannot enjoy themselves. They’ve got to constantly be finding something to upset themselves over.
Uhmm... why?
