Baby chicks ground alive by poultry producer: activists

Animal rights activists on Wednesday released a film in which thousands of discarded male chicks are shown being ground up while still alive -- cruel treatment which they said is typical of the modern poultry industry.

"These young animals are sorted, discarded, and handled like mere cogs in a machine," said the animal activist group Mercy For Animals in a press release.

The group said it obtained the film during an undercover investigation at the Spencer, Iowa hatchery, but said it shows the heartless treatment young chickens are subjected to across the poultry industry.

For its part, Hy-Line International said in a statement that its "number one priority is the care and safety of our birds and our employees."

"We have well-defined policies and procedures regarding poultry welfare and we are committed to meeting or exceeding all industry standards," the company said.

Hy-Line said it has launched an "immediate investigation of the entire situation."

"Following our investigation, if any violation of our animal welfare policies is found, the employee or employees involved will be disciplined per company policy, up to and including termination."

No big deal, they probably fed the grindings to the chickens so they didn’t go to waste!

Apparently this is an approved practice. Not illegal, though it should be.

I’m all for re-evaluating how livestock is treated before becoming food. There is no reason for Americans to behave like Asians when it comes to the treatment of animals, and for the most part, we don’t. Ours is a very humane society. But some farming practices are very troubling.

Disgusting...They need to be gassed then ground up. I prefer to break the necks or behead their parents, pull off all their feathers, then chop them into pieces then fry the pieces in hot grease...THEN EAT THE THE PIECES!!!!

I agree. I’m no PETA supporter but I think these slaughter houses should have higher standards then this. Just killing a baby chick this way is disgusting to me and wrong.

Disgusting if true.

I often walk by a Planned Barrenhood abortion mill in Boston. It looks for all the world as if it's guarded by half of the 101st Airborne.

*That's* true.*That's* disgusting.

I understand the initial revulsion here, but let me ask a couple of questions.

1. Do these “activists” have any other suggestion as to what to do with 30 Million baby roosters a year out of this one facility??

2. Would everyone feel better if these male chicks were dispatched before they were instantly shredded and re-used?

2.a Would a hammer-blow to the head of each chick make this procedure any more palatable if it was administered before the instantaneous shredding? How about electrocution?? Lethal injection??

3. How much more should consumers pay for eggs and poultry in order to satisfy this group of activists??

4. Assuming that these activists have the real goal of shutting down the egg and poultry business, what source of protein should we replace eggs and chicken meat with?? (Keep in mind that eggs are still considered one of the best sources of edible protein known to man...).

Animal rights people have been known to stage killings/abuse for publicity because the media always reports their spin. I’ll wait to find out if this is another disgusting stunt or actually a practice.

The group called on US grocery chains to label eggs in their store with a label reading: "Warning -- Male chicks are ground-up alive by the egg industry."

These people really are loony tunes.
