"Combustible" and "incombustible" are opposites but "flammable" and "inflammable" are synonyms. Why? The "in-" of "incombustible" is a common prefix meaning "not," but the "in-" of "inflammable" is a different prefix. "Inflammable," which dates back to 1605, descends from Latin "inflammare" ("to inflame"), itself from "in-" (here meaning "in" or "into") plus "flammare" ("to flame"). "Flammable" also comes from "flammare," but didn't enter English until 1813. In the early 20th century, firefighters worried that people might think "inflammable" meant "not able to catch fire," so they adopted "flammable" and "nonflammable" as official safety labels and encouraged their use to prevent confusion. In general use, "flammable" is now the preferred term for describing things that can catch fire, but "inflammable" is still occasionally used with that meaning as well.

Man slaps stranger’s crying kid
A Gwinnett County man is in custody Wednesday accused of slapping a stranger’s crying toddler in a Stone Mountain Wal-Mart. Witnesses say that Roger Stephens, 61, warned the mother of the child that he would “shut up the crying child if she couldn’t,” WSB-TV is reporting. Stephens is accused of slapping the 2-year-old multiple times in the face and then walking away. A bystander held Stephens until store security came to assist, according to the story.

How can “inflammable” mean “flammable”?
it Ps me O too, which is why i never use it. it’s counterintuitive!
I figure if a house can burn up while it burns down, then flammable and inflammable can be synonyms.
Keeps the foreigners confused, like the Belgian TA I once had who thought depressed was the opposite of pressed. (As in buttons on a scope which have two positions, pressed or “depressed.”)

Critics of James A. Traficant Jr. say the ex-congressman’s release from prison and a party welcoming him home make it appear as though the Mahoning Valley embraces political corruption.The critics have it wrong. The fact that they kept reelecting him, and the fact that democrats continue to reelect their crooks and tax cheats to office, make it appear as though Mahoning Valley (and democrat voters in general) embraces political corruption.
It seems that way, but what it means is "easily inflamed".
Flammable means that something will burn. (sort of like combustible)
Inflammable means that someting will inflame (sort of like an accelerant).
Yes, but only when it's "their" guys....

i know what it means, but the IN- prefix in so many other words means the opposite: insane, interminable, incoherant etc.
what do you mean? i think it’s outrageous. Conjures up images of kerchief wearing Elians down in Cuba listening to Fidel on the TV. Would i pull my kid out. No, as i posted on a thread yesterday, i wouldn’t deprive xsbrownie’s classmates or teachers of the commentary i am sure that she would provide before, during and after the viewing. We have orientation late this afternoon, i will be curious to see if this is mentioned.
I hghly doubt that the president is going to be asking children to go lobby for specific bills or policies. If he’s just giving a general “Help out your community” speech, i don’t see a problem.
Depends on content, I guess.

From what i had read about it, he is asking them to help HIM, not their country. And all of this BS about volunteerism smacks of socialism to me. and besides ALL of that, can you IMAGINE the hue and cry were BUSH to have attempted such a thing? it’s just wrong.
