Why anyone would settle for an INKJET these days is beyond me.

What they rape you for the cartriges can’t touch the printing quality and output you get from even the cheapest laser printer, and the up front price differencial is more than worth the cost.

Artists use inkjets sometimes but that is only for printing out fine art prints. And it's usually an expensive Epson with archival inks. I can't think of any other reasons to get ink over laser. (Plus the laser toner doesn't dry out.)

Can't get real photos from a laser.

You have a point.

I switched to inkjet to get color when laser color was simply out of the question. And I gave up my trusty black and white (and huge) HP laserjet in the process.

So make a recommendation if you can for a printer that will out perform an inkjet at an affordable price. And, if you can, comment on the possibility of a laserjet that can print on printable CDs and DVDs. I'm betting there is no such thing but, as my wife tells me, it never hurts to ask. I do a lot of CD/DVD printing and my $80 Epson R200 inkjet with my (relatively) cheap Chinese ink cartridges really works well for that function.

One obvious reason is that color inkjets are much less expensive than color laser printers, even when the costs of ink (or toner) are factored in over the printer’s lifetime. For the home user whose requirements are modest, this is decisive.

Low entry cost is the most important factor to volume sales. Lots of inferior technology is still around today because it’s just too cheap.

I agree. I’ve never even owned an ink jet printer. I’ve always owned laser printers, even when they were relatively expensive, because the cost per page is so cheap, they are extremely reliable, and the page quality is awesome.

Of course, I only have B&W, and don’t really care that I don’t have color. If I really needed color, I would keep an ink jet printer just for those instances but still use a laserjet for most printing.. Or if I needed a lot of color pages, I would spring for a color laser printer.

I quit printing photographs long time ago. It was just too expensive.

Now when I need a print from a photograph in my archive I send it to a local ( ) drug store that will provide a 4x6 for 19 cents. Better yet, if a family member wants a photo I just email it and let them print it.

I keep a printer but only use in on those rare occasions I need a document printed.

I discovered years ago the cost of the ink cartridges were way out of line for what you are getting.

I don’t need laser jet print quality. And really the price differential is still really high, I can get 6 ink jet printer for the price of the cheapest laser jet on the market, and toner cartridges for laser run the same price as the printers which makes them also 6 times as expensive as ink.
