"Instead of posting everything on the Internet, names could be held by the police, who would share them only with those, such as a school, that need to know."

Only liberals think like that. Liberalism truly is a mental disorder.

"'We are beating ourselves up over this,' Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf told reporters."

I think justice would be better served if so-called 'Sheriff' Rupf was taken behind a building and literally beaten up, locked in a cage for ten years, and forced to have sex with a perverted old man. Then I might believe he actually felt some genuine sorrow over this.

Last month, UC Berkeley Police Officer Allison Jacobs became suspicious of Garrido, figured out that he was a registered sex offender who was accompanied by two adolescent girls, and contacted Garrido's parole officer.

Aha! This is the link I'd been missing. I hadn't figured out from the other news reports how the connection was made between Garrido handing out pamphlets at UC Berkeley to being Jaycee's kidnapper. It all makes sense now, he had Jaycee's daughters with him.

He offered his "apologies to the victims" as he accepted "responsibility" for what did not happen.

That's all very well, but maybe he needs to "accept responsibility" for his department's failure by resigning his position.

It was said that this man kidnapped, raped and held a woman hostage previously. That he was convicted and sentenced to life plus 50 years and only served 12. If this is true there is absolutely NO reason that he wasn’t a top suspect.

What do you mean they “missed” her? They never bothered looking for her in the first place. A simple search through the DMV on the day she was taken would have brought up the car. Heck, a simple DMV search any day during the last 19 years would have brought up the pervert and the car. Who knows how many dozens if not hundreds of detectives’ desks has both Jaycee’s and the monster’s case files have sat on throughout the years and not one bothered to lift a finger. The LE had their chance time and time and time and time again but they couldn’t have cared less.

How’d they miss it? ‘Cause cops, especially in CA, are idiots. . .

They missed Garrido when he was a sexual preadtor, because that's no big deal.

They were alerted to him when he showed up at Berkly and wanted to pass out "religious" materials.

We can't have wackos like that walking around on campus. /s
