Old Man Winter doesn’t want to give up his frigid hold just yet, but his hold will mostly be in the middle of the country.
According to the 2010 Farmers’ Almanac, this winter will see more days of shivery conditions: a winter during which temperatures will average below normal for about three-quarters of the nation.
A large area of numbingly cold temperatures will predominate from roughly east of the Continental Divide to west of the Appalachians (see map). The coldest temperatures will be over the northern Great Lakes and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But acting almost like the bread of a sandwich, to this swath of unseasonable cold will be two regions with temperatures that will average closer to normal—theWest Coast and the East Coast.

No, no, no. You don’t see it. According to a post on a local news website, Global Warming does not mean that EVERYONE is going to get warmer, some climates might get colder, there might be more rain in dry places, and it might dry out in rainy places.
(Seriously, I am still feeling the burn from the hot tea I swallowed quickly rather than spit out after I read this).
What did it say? Was it mostly black or mostly white?
One Farmer’s Almanac I read, years ago...predicted the number of snows by number of fogs in August. I don’t know why, just one of those things that stuck with me...yep, strangely enough I watched it, remembering. So far it hasn’t failed.
There’ll be no snow in South Austin this year.
I actually get a thrill - amazing people with my prognosticating. I do however, give credit where credit is due.
Just tell Al Gore that his work is done, America is colder, the planet is saved and he can go retire somewhere. Quickly! Before he freezes us all to death.
I’m glad I laid up extra fire wood last winter. I have about 8 cords seasoned and ready to go.
I replaced an old air tight stove with a catalytic stove about three years ago. It was a great investment. I get much less creosote build up and burn about 25% less wood for the same amount of heat.
I live in the U.P.and the leaves are already showing signs of turning. It isnt from dry weather either. This morning we had wide spread frost.
Oh how I remember the winter of 76-77 when it did not get above 0 for days. 30 below was the norm. That was the year I froze my face scaling logs in a field.
Then there was the winter in the early 90s where it was cold for about a month straight. Many loggers left their machines run all night long to be able to work the next day.
She’s gonna be a long cold one. Havent seen the big lake iced completely over in some time..or Lake Michigan either for that matter. This could be the year.
The highs are in the low 80s here in Oklahoma all week. The weather has really been pretty nice except for about 3 weeks total this summer. I’m expecting to get to use my AWD this winter though.

We had a guy with swine flu in at work today, I was tempted to go into his room and breath deep, just to get the whole flu thing over with. Catch it while it is mild and not have to worry about vaccine shortages this fall.
I have thought this very thing. Get it now and beat the rush.

I mowed my grass friday night and I had to mow it again tonight. I betting I’ll be mowing again before the week is over.

1849 was near the beginning of the most recent warming period, when we've seen some sunspot mimimums, like those in the 1970s, and some maximums, including during the Dustbowl era of the 1930s, and late 1980s to the late 1990s, when Algore jumped on the Global Warming bandwagon, hoping to scare folks into increasing the powers of governement to tax and punish.
Yeah I remember that one, worked 2 weeks at the GM Cold Weather Test Site in Kapuskasing Ontario. Never got about zero F.
Flying over the Sault Ste Marie on a bright sunny day in a commuter prop plane was incredibly beautiful. Everything was all frozen as far as you could see.
I hope the Almanac is wrong about the West Coast. I have read that California is expecting an El Nino year, which means a lot more rain than usual (like 21 inches per year instead of 14). I’m sticking with the El Nino forecast, and crossing my fingers. We have had some unusual movements of sea critters like squids, which seem to support the El Nino theory.
It was a copperish color.
I don’t know that I agree with the FA this year. There is an El Nino building and that means more wet for the Pacific NW and does effect the interior. I am thinking its going to be colder than normal here and that we are going to get more snow than normal. We shall see.
