FRANKFURT - Scientists say a Roman horse head made from bronze and plated in gold has been discovered at an archaeological site in Germany.

Hesse state archaeologist Egon Schallmeyer says the head is part of a horse and rider statue and "qualitatively one of the best (pieces) created at that time."

"I sacked Rome and all I got is this horse head."

Actually, this indicates the Romans got further north than has sometimes been believed.

I have been to the Roman baths, Roman gate, and Roman theater in the city of Trier, which is pretty close to Frankfurt (couple of hours drive at the most).

Beautiful.

A horse's head, part of of an approximately 2,000 years old rider's statue was found in an excavation site in Waldgirmes some 20 miles north of Frankfurt.

Just north of Frankfurt is a reconstructed Roman border fort, Saalburg along with a section of the Limes, or fence of the Roman border. It sits on the east side of the Rhine. Everything to the west was a part of the Roman Empire. Mainz, also close to Frankfurt was a major Roman city and headquarters of a Roman legion.

It would come as a big surprise to residents of this region that anyone thought that the Roman Empire never came this far north.

A Rhine/Danube border has often been stated. That does seem foolish.

I am more surprised that the buildings were destroyed by Allied bombing in WWII.

Rahm Emanueal’s ancestors used to cut off horses’ heads and put in political opponents beds. Perhaps they plated one?

SunkenCiv had a different version of the same story and with a better picture of the head. Here.
