Madonna booed in Bucharest for defending Gypsies

BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a stage with Madonna. Then the pop star condemned widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies — and the cheers gave way to jeers.

The sharp mood change that swept the crowd of 60,000, who had packed a park for Wednesday night's concert, underscores how prejudice against Gypsies remains deeply entrenched across Eastern Europe.

Despite long-standing efforts to stamp out rampant bias, human rights advocates say Roma probably suffer more humiliation and endure more discrimination than any other people group on the continent.

Sometimes, it can be deadly: In neighboring Hungary, six Roma have been killed and several wounded in a recent series of apparently racially motivated attacks targeting small countryside villages predominantly settled by Gypsies.

"There is generally widespread resentment against Gypsies in Eastern Europe. They have historically been the underdog," Radu Motoc, an official with the Soros Foundation Romania, said Thursday.

When I visited Italy a few years ago it was obvious the Italians, some of the nicest people in the world, viewed them as vermin.

Agreed, my experience as well.  Their language is so beautiful to the ear it's like music and when they sing, it's usually about love.

YouTube - Claudio Baglioni-E tu

My direct, personal experience occurred on the metro while I was going to the Vatican. One of the vile little things made a move on me, I slapped down at it, jumped back, and yelled a large, loud NO!! All the Italians on the car cheered me, the Ugly American.

What a great way to make new friends in a country not your own...standing up for yourself against a common enemy.  A great experience that you'll cherish forever.    Their reaction that you describe reminds me of the widely reported movie audience reactions during screenings of the Charles Bronson film "Death Wish" which was released in the 1970's.  At that time, Americans were feeling the very real and very personal results of the Carter "Administration" and its focus on 'rehabilitation' of criminals and breathtakingly weak sentencing.  Crime naturally skyrocketed during that period and Americans were feeling that they were under siege from criminals who could walk all over them without a worry.  I believe it was a scene in "Death Wish" where Charles Bronson is sitting in a subway car late at night, reading a newspaper and minding his own business, and a gang of street thugs approach that became particularly famous.  One of them takes a switchblade knife and slices open the newspaper, only to see Charles Bronson holding a pistol at the ready behind it.  The thug is blown away and the movie audiences all over America would be standing up in their seats and cheering.  This at least is my recollection of the film and of the reported events of the time.

You can only push nice people so far, and at some point they will push back.

*grin* Most Americans use the terms as if they were the same.

No, LIBERALS use the term when it suits them and their agenda

In the Czech Republic the picture is similar: the country's 300,000 Roma, about 2.5 percent of the country's population, have a 70 percent unemployment rate.

in Hungary, where Roma make up an estimated 8 to 10 percent of the population, their unemployment now tops 80 percent; the national unemployment average is 7.7 percent.

And this is why I think it's vital to avoid statements like some that I see in here. No distinction is made between a few criminals and the overwhelming majority of the Roma population. I believe that this is shameful and dangerous. Especially given that the rhetoric against them in some countries is approaching that used by the Nazi's before they started killing them.

The fair coloring threw me off.

As you can see, she bleached her hair.

I must of spent $1000 on her at various salons and such.

They were all very well kept.

Even the small off the road joints have customers remove their sunglasses when they enter.

Funny, that's never happened to me.

I understand what you mean... but common usage is odd. Ask a few questions - poke around - and you'll see most people are pretty hazy on the differences between the ideas of race and ethnicity. I try to use whichever seems like it will be most clear at the time to the person I'm speaking with. I have enough problems with people confusing my choice of language as it is. I will cater on this point to avoid making confusion worse.

The Democrats created the artificial category of “Hispanics” in the 1970s as a way to create another class of victims, which they could imbue with special rights and privileges, including affirmative action and minority business set asides. The result is another minority group that votes Democrat. It doesn’t matter that, according to the Census Bureau, 51 percent of Hispanics self-identify themselves as white. The Census Bureau has even created the phony category of “non-Hispanic whites,” which are now 66 percent of the population and will be 50 percent in 2042. The reality is that “whites” will still be more than 70 percent of the population in 2042

Minorites are the beneficiaries of affirmative action and business set asides. For example, the Virginia Department of Minority Business defines a minority individual as “an individual who is a citizen of the United States or a non-citizen who is in full compliance with United States immigration law and who satisfies one or more of the following definitions:”

1.“African American” means a person having origins in any of the original peoples of Africa and who is regarded as such by the community of which this person claims to be a part.

2. “Asian American” means a person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands, including but not limited to Japan, China, Vietnam, Samoa, Laos, Cambodia, Taiwan, Northern Mariana, the Philippines, a U.S. territory of the Pacific, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka and who is regarded as such by the community of which this person claims to be a part.

3. “Hispanic American” means a person having origins in any of the Spanish-speaking peoples of Mexico, South or Central America, or the Caribbean Islands or other Spanish or Portuguese cultures and who is regarded as such by the community of which this person claims to be a part.

The Republicans need to expose the Democrats as the real racists and bigots who provide people, including newly arrived immigrants, with special rights and privileges based on race, ethnicity, and gender. The definitions of Hispanic and Asian under Virginia law are ludicrous. They make no sense. What do Japanese, Chinese, Indians, and Filipinos have in common except being from the same geographic region of the globe? Similarly, “Hispanics” encompass all of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, i.e., the former colonialists.

These types of classifications are reminiscent of those under apartheid in South Africa, which had four main groups with a number of sub-groups and even “honorary whites.” Republicans should take the lead in abolishing these discriminatory programs in post-racial America and use immigration as an example of the unfairness of these laws.

Well, isn't antisemitism back in style?

I am honestly not antagonistic. I find the Rom interesting. They are uniquely a Cryptic Culture. But I know enough about them to find your political correctness naive. Jews do not have at the heart of their culture a tradition of swindling, whatever the stereotypes.

Yes, I was testing you about the cats. They are filthy to to Rom. As a matter of fact, they would use the image of a cat as a Patteran (graphic image carved or drawn to alert oncoming "hoboes" as to what to expect on the road ahead. I saw this once in a catalog, and the writers of the catalog interpreted the image of a cat to mean "nice lady who'll offer you food." Had to laugh. It could well be that that is what some Gyspy told whoever wrote the copy for the catalog.

Any dealings with Gypsies should be approached with caution, however.

There are stories in the south of itinerant house painters who would go to all the trouble to paint a house, but always switch out the paint for something watered down and inferior. They would work hard and go to elaborate lengths just to cheat for a small amount of money.

walked out of a Duran Duran performance, along with some others after they started their antiwar tirade against Bush and our involvement in Iraq.

Duran Duran still performs? OMG. I just felt very old for a moment.

Hey!....That's my girlfriend! :)

If you spent any time in the casinos in the wee hours of Friday or Saturday night, you probably bumped into her.

She would show you her boobs for $100, and that's as far as that went. lol

She would always tell me "If I was a prostitute, I would be driving a Mercedes Benz."

What a character.

Part of the problem IMHO, is that gypsies who do not want to live in their traditional lifestyle tend to disassociate themselves from other gypsies, to avoid the stigma. As a result, nearly all folks known to be gypsies take part in that activity

Romnia are experiencing 70%, 80%, and even 90% unemployment in areas that otherwise have rates of 7-8%. Who wouldn't resort to theft under those conditions? They are denied housing - they are denied medical care. Who wouldn't be bitter and distrustful of outsiders under those conditions? It's not that I'm trying to be PC - its that they are in very real danger of pogroms and massacres again.

Yes, I was testing you about the cats. They are filthy to to Rom. It could also be that the person was confusing it with North American hobo code. I think they use many similar marks but they also have different meanings for some of the same marks. American hobos weren't organized around ethnicity so cultural marks like cats being unclean could drift away over time.
