I have recently switched to DSL and need to cancel my dial-up service (MSN). I've researched and researched, but I can't find a definitive answer to this question:
When I cancel my dial-up service, what happens to my email account (msn.com address)? Will I still be able to access my old email account via Hotmail?
How to proceed? Recommendations?

I did the same thing about 6 years ago, when I cancelled my then dial up msn service, and switched to DSL. I still use my msn.com email via Hotmail
Since Hotmail is otherwise free, I’d imagine it should remain accessible. You may lose any perks you had over the free version of the service, such as expanded mailbox size. I’ve only used the free hotmail, so I can’t elaborate further.
Yes, your hotmail account will still be the same. It is not dependent on your mode of accessing the internet.

Was your address @msn.com... not hotmail.com?
If so, then yes you may lose your messages. Forward all of them you want to save to another box before your service terminates.
I own an ISP.
When you cancel if you have an @msn.com email address you will lose that email address with your service.
if the email address is @hotmail.com you will not lose the address because you sign that up independent of the Dialup account.
For those of you saying email is not tied to your service provider, that’s wrong, if the email address is comcast.com cox.com, optonline.com. If your email address is yourowncompany.com no you won’t lose it.
I switched from one cable company to another last month. Hotmail is as always. It’s not like a proprietary thing such as RoadRunner. You can access it from any ISP.

I am still using my msn.com account from Hotmail.com right now as we speak, and I cancelled my msn dial up ages ago.
I have a msn.com address.
I can access thru Hotmail, but I think my old email may go bye-bye once I cancel MSN dial-up.

The problem with using the email service of your ISP is not so much loosing old mail, as much as loosing NEW mail that comes from old contacts.
It is what I regretted when I left the US. I had Bellsouth as my ISP.
One should always have a web based Email, and let all your contacts know what it is, in case you change your ISP.
I now do all email via Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail.

My ISP is Comcast. If I cancel my internet service through Comcast, any email accounts I have on Comcast are terminated by Comcast when I cancel my service. I would not have the option to keep them.
Any email accounts I have on an email service provider such as MSN.Com, Hotmail.com, gmail.com, yahoo.com (you get the picture) would remain since those email addresses are not hosted by Comcast.
The thing to remember is this: If the email account is hosted by the ISP and you cancel your service, you're losing your email. This is why most people use gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc.. for their "common" internet email address.
Years ago I got so frustrated having to change email addresses that I registered my own Domain name. Now I just forward my email from my own domain to whatever internet provider that I am currently using and my email address never changes.
It depends...is msn your dsl service? If not then you’ve got to ask her dsl service how to make sure your msn’s emails continue. There is a way...but I don’t know how. Make sure you’ve got your email service set up then cancel msn dial up...and if payment is electronic...I’d stop payment on it.
I cancelled my MSN dialup a while back and was allowed to keep my @msn.com email address.
I think MSN does it a little differently than Comcast or any other ISP. Any other one would revoke your email accounts, but MSN specifically said that I could keep it.
