Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 26, 2009 - dead hand
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 08/26/2009 | Sue Donymn

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

dead hand • \DED-HAND\ • noun

1: an inalienable possession of property by a church or corporation
2: the oppressive influence of the past *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence

Example sentence:

"If newspapers wish to survive," said Edward, "then editors need to wrest free from the dead hand of print journalism and embrace the more dynamic capabilities of the Web."

Did you know?
Does "dead hand" make you picture a pale dismembered hand creeping slowly toward its next unsuspecting victim? If so, you're in for a surprise -- but not a scary one. "Dead hand" is a literal translation of "mortmain," which comes from the Old French words "morte" (meaning "dead") and "main" (meaning "hand"). In very unspooky terms, both the French and English terms describe property that is left to a company, church, or charity in perpetuity. The "oppressive past influence" sense of both "mortmain" and "dead hand" developed from the idea of the dead exercising posthumous control over their property by dictating how it must be used after they die.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

one very annoying thing about the funeral, the cemetery forbid a graveside service. they can come in a few days AFTER the casket is in the ground and covered over. new rules. have you ever heard of such a thing?

and the calling hours were in the church the two hours before the mass......strange times.

It was on HBO Comedy last night. So no extras. Much better than She’s the Man. Amanda Bynes seems to do all right in making comedies, and you never see her doing pole dances on top of ice cream trucks or anything.

Every Catholic funeral I’ve ever attended ended with prayers at the cemetery. If not at the actual grave itself, in a chapel on site for that purpose.

It’s exactly what she can use. I watch my buddy’s TV when I am out of town quite frequently.

You hook the box to your cable box, dangle the remote control dohickey around front, connect to your home internet and voila!

You have a password and login setup so you can log in remotely to your TV. Only one user is allowed at a time, so you can’t “broadcast” your TV all over the place.

Works well with good bandwidth, at a college should not be a problem. Regular TV can usually be watched full screen on your computer (with a good connection). Fast-changing stuff like hockey, you may need to watch in a smaller box to avoid pixelation.

i will have to find out how that works exactly. i think her computer has something built into it to facilitate tv watching, if i recall correctly. i have emailed xshub’s IT guy about it, bc he went with xshub to get her computer and i recall him mentioning that capability. she hasn’t had tv access at school. cheap room mates who don’t want to pay for cable, though the one had a tv which they used to watch dvds on last year. i’d like her to be able to keep abreast of current events etc. without the expense of buying a tv and hooking up cable etc. i thought this was a way you had mentioned in the past. thanks.

i don’t recall being graveside for my MIL, and she died in Nov, they had the delayed burial bc of the ground being frozen etc. My SIL died in August and yes we were graveside for that one.

You’d have to buy the Slingbox hardware and install it at your house. Other than that, it’s free (no monthly charges, etc.) Maybe $200.

sounds good. she has a large screen laptop, she opted for that over portability, as she doesn’t take notes on it in class etc.

this is a new cemetery policy.......NO graveside services EVER, until the ground is covered over the casket and they schedule it.....and they warned them about sneaking in to be there........RME......one cousin has to leave town first thing this morning and she won’t be back for a year or more, yet she couldn’t go over. what a policy. I told them to go visit her grandmother’s grave which is close to where her mother would be. and this is a Catholic cemetery.

I try to be a good Christian-so I do hope that Ted Kennedy was reconciled with God, and will rest in peace. That said-

Once the eulogies are all spoken
And the crocodile tears are shed
May the ‘rats get the message
And let Obamacare go with Ted

And not push it in his memory
Making themselves look crass-
Let go of his dead hand policies
And just stop showing their ass-

Invoking a dead colleague’s name
Won’t revive your tanking tally
And will look even more ghoulish
Than the Wellstone funerally
