I was in the yard with my sons yesterday and heard this plane fly by several times. It continued to take off and land repeatedly. I figure that someone was practicing their landing an take offs. I live very close to the airport and drove over to snap some pictures. Any guess of the make of this fine aircraft. You tube link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F--oNoIK5aQ
There were several variations of the Jacobs used and the 190 used a Continental W-670 radial. Mine is turbocharged to 350 HP but the first version was the same 245 HP version used on the Bobcat...
. . . fitted with amphibious floats for water-bombing fires.
Not a very good picture since it was so far away but it appears to be a 1930s model, a Lockheed electra Model 10. Amelia Earhart was flying one when she disappeared. I could be wrong but that is what it looks like to me.
Heyup!
Yes, like one gigantic compound curve (big fish). I’ve heard that the tri-tail was a feature desired by TWA when Hughes (yes, that Hughes), owned TWA. Supposedly, it fit into the low hangar doors better (though the top of those stabilizers are plenty high if you’ve ever roamed around one.
Some of the engine iterations were lousy though. Just goes to show that looks can be deceiving.
Heyup
Thank you sir. I thought one of them was a licensed contrator to meet war demand.
His plane looked just like this one. This might be his, though I was pretty sure it had been rolled/destroyed by the guy my dad sold it to over 10 years ago.
I am sure when it came out it seemed futuristic, it has nice lines
I thought that that one had the option. There cannot be that many 195’s left with your engine. Oddly enough, the 195 is the first aircraft that I was aloud to “set hands on” while flying (which was the first stumble into a life of ruin, ending in Boeing).
Be careful with what you allow your children to play with!
Sounded great. Don’t hear that sound much anymore.
The turbo version was an aftermarket add-on (STC) and was re-designated R-755-S....there are more around than you might think...and we all know each other...well almost! You can tell a turbo by the exhaust high on the right side of the airplane with the normally aspirated engine having it's exhaust exit on the bottom left...but back to the point the Jacobs L4MB or dash 9 of 245 HP used on the Bobcat was also used on the first 195s
But what do I know? I've only got 30+ years in control tower operator/supervisor, and 5 of which were FAA.
and yes Marge Sky King did fly a Bamboo Bomber that he personally owned early in the series and switched to a Cessna 310...so there were actually two “Songbirds”.....:o)
Yes but how many Bamboo Bombers did you handle??...LOL!! :o) (TWR: "aircraft calling tower say again type??...")
