Weird cases: never yawn before a judge

No matter how tedious a case gets, courtroom boredom should never be made manifest. Lord Birkett noted: “I do not object to people looking at their watches when I am speaking. But I strongly object when they start shaking them to make certain they are still going”. Recently, Clifton Williams discovered just how harsh the law can get for those who express their boredom in court too openly. Williams was in the Will County courthouse in Illinois where his cousin had pleaded guilty to a drugs offence.

When Judge Daniel Rozak passed sentence at the end of the cousin’s case – two years’ probation – Williams stretched out his arms widely and gave vent to a long, loud, undulating yawn. For that, the judge immediately found him in contempt of court and sentenced him to six months in jail.

Yawns can’t be helped. But loud dramatic arm stretching ones can. You’ll never win when you are basically giving the finger to the judge.

Damn it Joe you know better than to show a photo of a bunch of people YAWNING. Even seeing the word yawn makes someone yawn.

I had a college prof who used to stop class to yell at people for yawning.
