What killed Mozart?

A new European study says it wasn't bad pork chops or a jealous rival:

There have been a lot of theories about what killed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at age 35, said Doug Stanglin in USA Today. Was it kidney failure? Undercooked pork chops? Poisoning? But a report in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests the composer may have died from a simple case of strep throat.

This will come as good news to fans of Mozart's "jealous rival, Italian composer Antonio Salieri," said Sue Michaels in Chattahbox. Salieri, after all, is the one rumored to have poisoned Mozart back in 1791. Mozart’s death certificate offered little in the way of medical clues, other than to say that he died of severe fever and rash. Maybe that's why the conspiracy theories lasted so long.

Even now the European researchers behind this study say to take their findings with a grain of salt, said Jacob Goldstein in The Wall Street Journal. The fact that Mozart suffered from fever, swelling, and rash doesn't point to any specific disease, so the authors of the study looked at community-wide outbreaks of disease at the time to see which "might fit with the great man’s death." Strep throat seemed a better fit than scarlet fever -- but there's still room for debate.

It was Salieri.

Salieri: My plan was so simple. It terrified me. First I must get the death mass and then, I must achieve his death.

Father Vogler: What?

Salieri: His funeral! Imagine it, the cathedral, all Vienna sitting there, his coffin, Mozart’s little coffin in the middle, and then, in that silence, music! A divine music bursts out over them all. A great mass of death! Requiem mass for Wolfgang Mozart, composed by his devoted friend, Antonio Salieri! Oh what sublimity, what depth, what passion in the music! Salieri has been touched by God at last. And God is forced to listen! Powerless, powerless to stop it! I, for once in the end, laughing at him!

Salieri: The only thing that worried me was the actual killing. How does one do that? Hmmm? How does one kill a man? It’s one thing to dream about it; very different when, when you, when you have to do it with your own hands.

No one is never going to know.

He was buried in a common grave after acid was poured over his body.

These are the same folks who believe in global warming because of their inventions (active mines…if they had one).

The “Salieri as jealous composer-killer” was a “theory” made up by a hack playwright.

Salieri and Mozart weren’t exactly friends, but they were aware of each other’s talents and were cordial, at least.

A great book about Mozart is “Mozart: A Cultural Biography”, by Ronald Gutman. Mr. Gutman researched the Saliera-as-killer “theory” and debunks the “theory” with solid reasearch and documentation.

Active mines = active minds

Sorry.

I have a Mozart CD on right now.

It is tragic for those who have no understanding for the great composition of great music…I stress the word “composition” of music. But then I really don’t care. Your lose, not mine.

I will not argue this further.

Salieri has fans? I've sung some of his music. Mozart's characterizing it as sounding like a fart in "Amadeus" is pretty close.

I understand.

I am here in Panama. It is sticky and warm here too. I don’t know the temp, but it is not good.

As those hurricanes start flying over the Atlantic north of us, there will be a comfortable change. It will bring much rain to us.

By the way, Bill Gates is nuts thinking he can control hurricanes:

1. He can’t. He is not God although he may think he is.

2. No one controls Mother Nature.

3. We need these rains in Panama or we would be another Sahara.

Wow, I’m sure it’s much worse in Panama.
Yeah, Gates thinks he can control hurricanes. Where was he during Katrina? Probably hiding under the bed!

“Probably hiding under the bed!”

Certainly that would have been the first place to look.

Regardless of how he died, his departure at such a young age was a hell of a note.

Okay, I just looked it up…46 minutes ago the temp was 89 degrees and humidity 75. It’s the humidity that’s the killer. If the sweat can’t evaporate off one’s body because of the humidity, it is very difficult to function.

“Wow, I’m sure it’s much worse in Panama.”

Yes, because of the humidity, when temps reach 94-95 (not always but enough times), is awful.

Yes. It was a hell of note!!!! Very well put!!!

And it sinks my heart every time I listen to Mozart, which is almost every day, to think what more could he have given to the world. What a treasure lost forever.

My response was flip, but heartfelt. It WAS tragic that he died so young. Schubert, as well. Oh, well... Let’s put a Handel on it and get Bach to basics. (Dare I say it? Another score. From clef notes, mayhap?) sd
