Vanity: Who is your Favorite Freeper?
self

Posted on 08/17/2009 6:10:52 PM PDT by Jean S

A thread with this title was posted about 10 years ago. The top choices were JohnHuang2 and kattracks (who sadly died of cancer a couple of years ago).

My current favorites are governsleastgovernsbest for posting his great commentaries from newsbusters here (this is NOT an ad). I also like RobinMasters, he finds great articles to post. Also, kudos to Cindy for her relentless research. And of course, Jim Robinson who makes this all possible.

This thread is dedicated to kattracks, a true friend of FR. May she rest in peace.

LOL on Laz. I would love to meet him.

You're one of those women who sends love letters to famous convicts, aren't you?

How could I forget Iscool, who is a great defender of the faith against cultish groups who claim they are ‘christians.’

Being the conceited SOB that I am I naturally nominate myself. :-)

But seriously, in the years I have been here we have made so much history in our own way it’s impossible to gauge. Naming a favorite FREEPER would mean having to list everyone here.

Thank you!

I don't dare try to name my favorites--I know I'll leave out a few. But my favorites know who they are. At least they should by now anyway :)

And more so if any are rescued from the flames, in part by such pontificating.

I never grew to like Parr .... there was some little edge of arrogance maybe, that caused me not to warm up to him. His guests always seems to out-shine him, IMHO
Paar, as I noted earlier, had no sense of just how to communicate any feeling that something wasn't quite right for himself and thus seemed congenitally unable to give the impression that he was anything other than a spoiled kid at heart. The way he handled the Lucky Strike suggestion of a running gag or continuing referential was the classic example. Knowing that story, I should have been very unsurprised at some of his antics in the The Tonight Show years.

Clearly the man was an excellent comedian---listen to his summer 1947 programs and you know the talent was there, even outsized, remarkably, for one still so untried---but just as clearly he tended toward biting the proverbial hand that fed him, without either Fred Allen's finesse or Henry Morgan's peculiar joie de vivre (I think I spelt it right!); even if you could say that in fact Henry Morgan wanted to bite off the whole arm, he had a kind of panache about it that Paar lacked. Both Allen and Morgan (it's not so far-fetched to mention them in the same breath; Fred Allen was a friend and admirer of Henry Morgan, including having Morgan on his final Fred Allen Show ever) knew how to zap such things as rankled Paar in the best way possible---in their comedy, making sport and satire out of suggestions or impositions they found intolerable.

(The classic example, perhaps: Morgan's early jibes at "Old Man Adler" when he had to read Adler's Shoe Stores commercials he didn't particularly like, which resulted in the New York shoe chain switching from wanting to can him to wanting to extend him . . . when they discovered larger crowds coming to the stores looking to meet Old Man Adler!)

For Lucky Strike, when Paar harrumphed their suggestion off it must have seemed like not just biting the hand that fed him immediately but the hand that trained him, considering Jack Benny's importance to Paar's career. As in, Paar very well might not have had a career without Jack Benny's original patronage. There are ways to communicate distaste without seeming as though you'd as soon commit murder upon the miscreant. Had Paar known or learned that lesson, he might have had a far less fitful career.

Paar in his television years could also be precisely the kind of deceiver he claimed his sponsors could be now and then. It's only the all-time classic example that, when he had William F. Buckley, Jr. as a television guest, raised questions regarding Gore Vidal (this was several years before the infamous Buckley-Vidal feuding as 1968 political convention commentators/debaters), got Buckley's less-than-affirming answers, told his viewers, "Wait---Gore Vidal's agreed to come on next week!" as if it were a spontaneous announcement, only to have the proverbial egg on his proverbial face when it turned out he'd pre-arranged Vidal's followup. Something like that.

By the power vested in me---through the state of inebriation---I now pronounce you husband and knife. You may now slice, dice, and chop the bride . . .
