Bob Who? Dylan Gets Treated Like a Commoner (How does it feel?)
NBC Bay Area ^ | Fri, Aug 14, 2009 | HASANI GITTENS

Maybe they would have recognized him if he had introduced himself as Robert Allen Zimmerman.

Folk and rock god Bob Dylan was treated like an mere mortal by Jersey shore cops when a someone called to report a shady looking man wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, N.J, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, said Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley.

But the singer of such classics as "Subterranean Homesick Blues" wasn't carrying ID, so police took him back to his hotel, where tour staff vouched for him.

A Dylan publicist didn't return a call seeking comment.

A teachable moment for Gates, Urkel, and Cadillac Devalle.

I’ll bet Dylan didn’t mind a bit. Thought it was an interesting way to spend an afternoon probably.

Apparently, the person who phoned it in was racist....

“The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.”

They really need to do a better job in the music programs at these NEA-controlled public schools.

I may have to carry around a couple CDs to have in handy for the next time a young cop pulls me over for a traffic ticket.

From what I've heard about Bob Dylan, the man and his bohemian attitude ... this was probably no big deal for him ... he probably cooperated fully with the cops and didn't raise a fuss such as "do you know who I am?". They took him back to the hotel where tour crew vouched for him ... no problem.

I think that this reporter is only publishing this episode because in this celebrity driven media something like this happens and it is, of course - Bob Dylan - but otherwise its a non-story

How does it feel?

Not likely. I recall a story from years ago contrasting Dylan with Elton John as they tried at difference times to enter Israel. EJ made a "big celebrity" fuss, while Dylan just quietly got into the security line.

This will cause zero to say Dylan acted stupidly.

Bob is good people. Not what some might think of as a typical celebrity/rock star type.

Most the time, he enjoys being a complete unknown.

"Like a Rolling Stone" - arguably the finest rock and/or roll song ever. The last verse makes me think of the obozo elitist...

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe

You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

I always thought that at Monterey, Jimi sang "cigarettes to conceal" ... if you listen to it closely it really sounds like three syllables

So an old white guy decides to go for a walk. Wanders into a predominantly minority neighborhood. The police stop him and demand his papers. He can't produce his ID so they put him in the squad car and take him back to his hotel and have someone vouch for him.

Too bad he wasn't an illegal alien. They wouldn't have hassled him at all.

Almost forgot to mention my favorite Jimi song is his cover of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower".

Another tidbit was Jimi singing "'excuse me while I kiss this guy". I was devastated when I heard him sing that line!
