I don’t think so. The camera is definitely focused on something in the foreground, and his whiskers are perfectly integrated into the scene around him.

I don’t think so. The fact that the people are out-of-focus lends credence to an auto-focus camera just taking over.

It looks photo-shopped.

I think it's real, because newer cameras adjust the focus by "pinging" off the closest object. If they had taken a picture of themselves without the squirrel, they would naturally have been in focus.

Apparently what happened here is that they set the camera on a rock and set the automatic timer, which gave them a few seconds to get seated before it clicks the shutter. The squirrel heard the timer whirring and stood up near the lens to investigate -- and the camera focused sharply on him, throwing the couple in the background out of focus.
