I need to get a camcorder for the DC teaparty and general political activism. I figure in these turbulent times others probably are considering the same so I thought I'd throw it out to seek the collective wisdom of FReeperdom.
Inexpensive - don't want it to hurt too much if thugs smash it.
Battery life - long enough to take in whole events or be easily swappable
Zoom - head shot interviews to crowd scenes
Microphone - like zoom
Video Quality - good enough, HD not needed for youtube
Record to flash - want to be able to pull flashcard in crisis if camera might be grabbed
Youtube friendly
You should probably buy the one you can afford. Try to get one with both a hate and a spit shield, with maybe a rose-colored lens.
"I am a police officer and I use this camera when interviewing people. I was initially disappointed with the sound quality, but found the video and capacity with the 2gig card excellent. The problem with the sound is the waterproofing. If you are not going to be using it in water or wet environments all you have to do is remove the mic cover and there is a black square rubber cover over the mic. It is 1mm or thicker and causes the sound distortion and lack of range. Remove it an re-install the cover and you get as good a sound as any other video camera. This camera is well made and a good value at the price. If it had an external mic jack it would rate five stars."
With the likelihood that your camera will be confiscated by thugs and they will beat you over the head with it, the price of $59.99 sounds reasonable.
$99.00 at Wal-mart. I wouldn't carry anything expensive. Likely to get
crammed in you face by one of those lovely, tolerant 0bama supporters.

Get one that uses SD cards. Then buy a small capacity cheap card that you can turn over should someone attempt to confiscate the card. Turn over the cheap empty one, rather than the one with the video on it.

I just got a Kodak Zi6 just for this. ~ $150, if it gets destroyed by 0bamunists no big loss. Flash drive, cheap and easy to upgrade memory. Built in USB so we can stick it in a laptop, d/l video and images, then wipe the memory and record some more.
Only downside is no good zoom but it’s the size of a cell phone so it conceals very well. I had no problem getting good video at Doggett’s used car sales pitch.
You’ll need 2. One for ostensibly taping the action, which the authorities will take away from you illegally. And a second more surreptitious one to prove that the other camera was taken illegally.
Amazon has Kodak zi6 for $122. Good pocket flip type camera. Supports HD (720). Uses SD card (2 gig about 1 hour recording time.)
I agree the pocket/flip type of cameras are the best to take.
A video camera should be MANDATORY equipment for us. The left likes to hide in the dark. Doing something, then denying they did it.
YouTube is our best friend. We should be filming every “fishy” thing we see and uploading it to YouTube to expose it to the daylight of the world.
