HUNTINGTON BEACH A 17-year-old boy, who was riding atop his friend's car and thrown off onto the road, died from his injuries, authorities said today.
Christopher Hernandez II, of Huntington Beach, was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. today at UCI Medical Center in Orange, according to the county coroner's Web site.
About 9:05 p.m. Friday, police received a call to assist the fire department with a teen who had fallen off of a moving vehicle near Brannen Drive and Wildrose Lane.
Hernandez was riding on the roof of 2006 Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on Brannen and was thrown from the roof onto the road when the car, driven by another 17-year-old boy, attempted to make a right, southbound turn onto Wildrose.
Hernandez, who suffered major head and abdomen injuries, was taken to the hospital, police say.

Kids take stupid chances. Some of them die. It’s sad, but it’s been going on forever.

I had a buddy who helped me with my paper route when I was in high school. Late one Saturday night when we were getting the Sunday edition out early, he rode on the hood of the car with a bag of them, and tossed them to each porch as we went along. Just as we got to the top of a steep hill and started down, I hit the brakes and he went flying ass-over-teakettle all the way to the bottom - a good 400-500 feet. I thought I'd killed him. After a couple of seconds, he finally moved, got up, came limping back up the hill laughing, and said to me, "That was fun!"
A few years later, he went in the army, and made a career of it. LOL

Dumb thing to try, but teenagers (even ones close to legal adulthood) often take dumb risks because they think they’re invincible. I look back at some of the dumb stuff I pulled in my teens (note to past self: hopping trains, even slow-moving ones, is not a smart thing to do), and am sometimes amazed I still limb and life.
Prayers for the friends and family of the teen.

I guess they weren't paying attention when Newton's Laws of Motion were being taught in science class.

This sounds pretty stupid, but I've heard of worse, in my area. A number of years ago, one of my co-workers lost a cousin, in a swimming accident.
The kid (teenager) was swimming in a pool next to an old broken dam. The pool contained broken pieces of concrete, with rebar sticking out, under the water. It's a popular place to swim, but everybody who goes there knows it's far too dangerous to dive into the water.
Well, the kid dove in, hit a piece of rebar, and it killed him. The really "stupid" part comes later. Another cousin, who was there, was explaining the accident to friends, a few months later. He decided to demonstrate. He hit the same piece of rebar.
