Another excellent tool for this purpose is the Flip Mino HD mini video camera.

It is about the size of a pack of cigarettes, and weighs only a bit more. It costs only $200 on Amazon. It takes video of exceptionally high quality for its size, much superior to the football sized digital video camera I purchased only a few years ago. Even its low-light performance is exceptional. The audio is quite acceptable. The controls are incredibly simple. It has a pullout USB jack that both transfers video to your computer and recharges the battery, so there's no cable to lose or damage.

This is a real freedom fighter's tool. Get one and keep it handy always.
