Interesting since his dad races for Audi! Then there is the lack of progress with Sauber which lead to Binotto being appointed whom Carlos has raced for with Ferrari. WOW! Very complex! There had to be a lot of pressure on Carlos to race for Audi. Wonder happens to his dad’s drive? What was the working relationship between Binotto and Carlos? With Binotto and a major OEM there must of been one hell of a reason to pick Williams. Williams not an OEM, no relationship and smaller budget…. 🧐🧐🧐

Well Williams has Vowles who comes from a great winning team, something which Sauber cannot claim even with Binotto.

Then there is the fuel usage issue of Binotto’s engine. It was the grey area for sure. Maybe be why Binotto became Ferrari F1 head and then was forced out after the FIA actions. Carlos was with Ferrari, so one week after Binotto is appointed to run Sauber Carlos signs with Williams…. 🧐🧐🧐🧐

All speculative but interesting reactions and timing.

1.5 kg.

According to Merc's Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin,

"...the cars started the race the same weight. Lewis and George were both weighed after qualifying, the cars were within 500 grams. George’s was the only one that had the problem and it’s because things like the tyre wear was much higher. It looks like we lost more material on the plank...”

3.3 lbs. You'd think a gang or master-racers would be immune to such a YUGE mistake but this is the same crew that got fined €25,000 at Singapore 2022* for failing to list Hambone's facial jewelry on his scrutineering form.

I would bet they knew as the end of this weekend's race neared that they had lost control of the numbers. Instead of increasing their safety margin by boxing Russell late for new rubber -- which would have have cost them a podium -- they rolled the dice and got him disqualified instead.

I also think rolling the plank into this is a red herring. Wear of >1.0mm at any of the witness holes will get you DQ'd, and even at max density (1.45), that's just not a significant portion of 1.5 kg. I can't see where the plank played a significant role in this when they didn't also get popped for excessive plank wear.

* Initially Hambone was fined as well but he got off because he had "medical exemption" to keep all his facial beautification hardware installed.

Instead of telling him, "Take that shit out of your face when you're driving OUR CAR," Merc created a process whereby some flunkie inquires of Hambone before each event which jewelry he intends to keep installed.

Yet another independent outside investigator has ruled that allegations by Christian Horner’s former personal assistant are baseless. Red Bull now consider the matter closed.

GPBlog is stating that not only is the matter not concluded, it’s likely to get much worse because the woman probably will take her case to the British courts.

On an unrelated note, US DOJ has advised Liberty Media that they are under antitrust investigation for denying Team Andretti’s application to join F1.

Chode, our excellent FRiend and F1 Expert, what might be the best online source (or sources) of where the current drivers will sit in 2025? I've tried some search terms and seen some headlines, but I'd love to know the best sources of the latest F1 "depth chart" as they say in football.

Ideally, I'd also be interested in salaries, as that is a measure of a driver's standing.

Thanks muchly in advance, and most highest regards!

A walk down memory lane of some of the more exotic aerodynamic tweaks in F1's past:

F1 Aerodynamics But They Just Get Weirder

Which goes to my point that "Wing-Quest" is killing the sport. The cars are too composed. When you see a car wiggle even the tiniest bit in the corners, it can only mean that something broke or the driver botched the turn.

If they want to make F1 exciting again, limit wings to two (2) in number, both with but single element, and camber and chord both must remain constant across the wing's span.

Plus mandate that front wings must be made of non-frangible materials so the circuit doesn't get showered with carbonfiber needles every time there's contact.

They'll save a ton of money on aerodynamic research and cars will once again have to rely on the adhesion of big, wide, sticky tires, and we'll go back to the good old days when the fastest way through a corner was ... sideways.
