An antiques dealer has picked up what could be a priceless church relic dating back 1,300 years at a car boot sale. The small piece of painted wood is believed to have come from a box which the Knights Templar used to protect religious items as they moved across Europe during the Crusades of the Middle Ages. Quite how this ornate piece of wood found its way to a car boot sale in Yorkshire is anyone's guess. But it could bring Leeds antiques dealer Martin Roberts a big windfall at the next stop on its unlikely journey - an auction house in London. Martin Roberts with his find: The 'Knights Templar' tabarnacle door which could date back to 700AD Analysts believe the item, which measures 10 inches by four inches, is the lid or door from a tabernacle and could be 1,300 years old. ... Mr Roberts took the tabernacle door to a friend in Doncaster who, after studying the item's intricate design, thought Jesus and St George were illustrated. He then showed it to other colleagues in the trade, who suggested that the pictures may in fact depict an angel and a Roman horseman killing a Turk. He said most of his friends agreed that the piece was probably of Eastern European or Russian origin, but no one could say precisely what it was with any certainty. 'The first thing they all told me was, "It's old",' he said, 'but they found it difficult to tell exactly how old it was. 'Most experts are of the view that this piece was more than likely from a tabernacle which the Knights Templar would have used to carry the sacrament and other religious items.'

My car doesn't wear boots, but in the winter, I put chains on the tires... :0)
Yes. The Templars were founded shortly after the capture of Jerusalem in the early 1100s and destroyed by the monster king Phillip the Fair of France in 1307.
"I was wondering where I put that box!"
Very cool. Pardon my ignorance, but what the heck is a “car boot sale”? Is that like a flea market or swap meet?
If it's not on crushed velvet with either Elvis or Dogs Playing poker as the subject, then I really have no idea what it is or when it was made.
I’m no expert, but it reminds me of a lot of European early midieval art. The colors , however, seem almost too vivid to be 900 years old. Just my ignorant observation ...
Exactly like a swap meet or flea market. It mean's selling crap out of the trunk (boot) of your car.
I think I recognize the guy on the right from a Monty Python sketch.
He does bear a striking resemblance to John Cleese and the guy to the immediate left could be Eric Idle. I'm positive that the guy on the top is Billy Dee Williams in his Lando Calrissian costume. And, the guy on the bottom could be Harry Potter, or George Stephenopolous.
If my memory serves me right a "car booth" is British for car trunk.
Therefore I venture to guess, it is about someone selling things out of car's trunk somewhere.
GOD: Arthur! Arthur, King of the Britons! Oh, don’t grovel! If
there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s people groveling.
ARTHUR: Sorry—
GOD: And don’t apologize. Every time I try to talk to someone it’s
“sorry this” and “forgive me that” and “I’m not worthy”. What are you
doing now!?
ARTHUR: I’m averting my eyes, oh Lord.
GOD: Well, don’t. It’s like those miserable Psalms— they’re so
depressing. Now knock it off!
ARTHUR: Yes, Lord.
GOD: Right! Arthur, King of the Britons — your Knights of the Round
Table shall have a task to make them an example in these dark times.
ARTHUR: Good idea, oh Lord!
GOD: ‘Course it’s a good idea! Behold! Arthur, this is the Holy
Grail. Look well, Arthur, for it is your sacred task to seek
this Grail. That is your purpose, Arthur — the Quest for the
Holy Grail.
ARTHUR: A blessing!
LAUNCELOT: A blessing from the Lord!
GALAHAD: God be praised!
This is what they thought about the Sistine Chapel until it was cleaned. Because they had used candles for lighting, there was soot and other things. The Italian govt spend tens of millions to clean it. Once it was cleaned - they were shocked at the vivid colors. Some people said they ruined it etc. I know it is not 900 years old but some old artwork was suprisingly bright.
If you’re going to decipher Brit. speak about cars remember the boot is our trunk, the bonnet is our hood, the wind screen is our wind shield, a spanner is our wrench, petrol is our gasoline, left is our right and the manuals incomprehensible.
The Lucas motto: “Get home before dark.”
Don't forget the insufferable electrical problems and the unending oil leaks. My dad used to say, if you want a reliable and unending supply of oil, buy a British car and park in your garage for the weekend.
