Well, I know you have tried some of yorkie’s recipes and we are always discussing food! I used to cook a lot more than I do now. Its hard to cook for one like I used to cook for the family. But I did fry me some delicious oysters tonight...I do the old fashioned fried oysters like my Mama did. Breaded in cornmeal and fried in a skillet of oil and real butter. Yes, they are fattening but they will make you smack you grandma down!!! And of course, I don’t fry many foods at all!
And I don’t fix oysters too often.

My husband’s family had a Christmas tradition of Oysters for Christmas morning breakfast. A big skillet of fried oysters, another skillet of scrambled eggs, jams, jellies, or fried apples and hot biscuits. We did that for years and then when the family started spreading out and having their own families, the tradition slipped away! Too many families to visit and eat with, etc.etc. thats the way life is!

Leaving on a Jet Plane, Peter, Paul and Mary, right?

I don't have to be home at any particular time.

Old Ironsides*

Aye, tear her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;

Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon’s roar;
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more!

Her decks, once red with heroes’ blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o’er the flood,
And waves were white below,

No more shall feel the victor’s tread
Or know the conquered knee;
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!

Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;

Nail to the mast her holy flag,
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!

My great-grandma used to actually ‘drink’ the grease from bacon and sausage - every morning. I know it sounds SO gross (and I even thought so as a child!), but guess what? She lived to be 97.

I have a very good friend who gets mail from some holistic place, and reads every word, then lives by it. Her husband has been very ill for a long time - and when he was hospitalized a few months back, she was told that his tests showed that he had absolutely NO salt in his system - and she was told that was very dangerous.

He was released from the hospital shortly, and went back home. Three weeks later, he was so ill, she had to call 9-1-1, and he was rushed back to the hospital by ambulance.

Sure enough - they found absolutely NO SALT in his system. (She has read that salt is bad - and he gets absolutely NO salt in his ‘juice’.)

She has now decided that any meat or cheese or eggs are ‘bad’ and she is feeding him only organic fruit and vegetables - put in the juicer - for every meal.

He has become so thin and emaciated. I truly fear for his life.

My point? We only have one life. I believe we should enjoy it, with every aspect of our being. Why should we deprive ourselves? (I am not saying ‘do what my grandma did’), but enjoy a dessert once in awhile - or fried oysters. Savor the smell, the texture, the taste of food.

And add a little salt.

I whole-heartedly agree. Anything in moderation except drinking bacon grease. My husband was in Institutional Food Sales for many years. He only called on Restaurants, Hospitals, School Systems,etc. no grocery stores and such as that. Every time he called on certain places, they would always offer food. Big fat juicy homemade rolls at one hospital, I remember, and homemade pie at another place. Always something.

This one Greek couple who ran a nice restaurant ate greens everyday loaded with olive oil. They ate other foods too but always greens and olive oil. They both were very healthy....seldom had any ailments, etc. That was before olive oil became so popular as it is today.

One time, my hubby had an intestional problem that kept bothering him and they told him to drink a half bottle or whole bottle of olive oil and it would cure him. At that time it was the smaller bottle (forget the brand)! He did and got better. After that if he had intestional problems, he would drink several tablespoons of olive oil and get straightened out.

That is why when I hear how good olive oil is for you, I am a believer.
