I’d be interested in hearing from people who’ve bought that service too.

If you want to save your pst files, do a search save to a thumb drive.

They are all pretty much the same - CarbonCopy is good too.

Don’t allow sensitive data however to leave your computer.

or,

Use a flash drive (14.00) at Fry’s for 4G and keep in safety deposit box or other family members home.

No Mac snobs need apply...

Is it being snobbish to point out that Macs really are better?

Not breaking News.... but..

We use carbonite here at our family run business. We love it. It does as promised. I guess there is a concern over your data being saved on someone elses servers. I guess it comes down to personal preference. I would recommend Carbonite for backing up files offsite.

We have had no issues with them at all. I hope this helps.

I use Sonic's BackUp MyPC, which is a file-based backup utility (not a drive image utility). This tool has the ability to back up open files (like Outlook's .pst file).

I have used Carbonite since January and I am quite happy with it.

I have not (thankfully) needed to restore any files, yet. But, the backups are smooth and silk as the interface is excellent.

If your online backup provider goes vbelly up, then what?

Copying PST files should be enough.

If you don’t care for letting your data out of your hands.

Why not just make a ghost image on your b/u drive? TAkes a while (8 to 10 min) but has the advantage of a very fast restore if your internal drive craters...

I use it (Carbonite) on a Mac. Your insistence on not hearing from me, however, makes you seem, dare I say, a bit “snobish”. Nonetheless I have over 100 GB backed up right now. I have already had to rescue one file. It was easy and I didn’t have to restore the entire drive like some of these services. (Remember, the Mac software is brand new so your PC version has a lot more miles behind it.) I encrypt sensitive data on my drive even though it is encrypted as it is transferred and when it is stored. I compared 6 or so services and liked the price and ease of restore (one file at a time or the whole disk). Remember however, they are all going to take a LONG time to do the initial BU. 100GB took about a month.

Use a drive image back up like Ghost, you’ll be far happier. If you lose your hard drive or get a virus you can’t get rid of and have to rebuild from scratch, how long does it take you? I can do it in about 20 minutes.
Much better than rebuilding a machine from scratch and then downloading your data. If you’ve got an external drive and backup often, it’s the ONLY way to recover...

So you ARE 'logged between'?

IMHO, I fail to see the reason why anyone individual or small business needs to use Carbonite or a similar service. Use an external or second internal hard drive with Norton Ghost or a similar program. Set the program to create a mirror image of your hard drive once a week and to back-up data files daily. I have never had an issue backing up .pst or any other file using this process.

I’m sure Carbonite and similar services are sufficient if they don’t have a security breach, go out of business, or file for bankruptcy — But these are very big “ifs” that I am not willing to chance.

18 months ago I took advantage of their 15 day offer advertised by Rush. 13 days into the trial my hard drive failed. Replaced the drive and recovered my data, just as advertised. No problems, no lost files. Without Carbonite, color me screwed. I’m a believer.

Storage space is so cheap these days I prefer to keep backup local, DIY. NAS units, USB drives, 2nd computer, whatever..., and you can use any number of backup programs, I like SyncBack... tell it what and when and it does the rest.

I don't like letting my data out of my control, thus I would suggest a 500GB backup drive (which can be purchased for about the same price as a year of Carbonite), and very easy to use.

The downside is, of course, that the backup drive will protect your data from system crashes, but will be subject to the same environmental hazards as your system (fire, flood, theft, etc). If those are real concerns, then store your backup offsite.
