...Vin Scully, thought to be retiring this winter after 60 seasons, said this week he is planning on coming back for one more summer.
Scully, 81, said if he continues to feel well he will work past his landmark year and retire after the 2010 season...

whenever that day comes, :) will turn to :(
There is an eerie feeling about this. When I was in grade school - Vin was the voice of the Dodgers. There are now a few places where even I can get a Senior Citizen Discount - And Vin Scully is the voice of the Dodgers....

Very true. But I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
I shudder when I try to contemplate his replacement(s). Eric Rogers can’t avoid making irrelevant observations. And he has an annoying set of cute terms of his own (he grabs a bat; the bases are clear; mound=hump; inning=frame; hump-back liner; foul into the grandstand; etc.) and any ball hit high into the outfield is apt to be called a pop-up, regardless of the distance.
Bump for one of the greatest.
We have been, and still are, so blessed to have Vin Scully as our Dodgers announcer guy. It’s dreadful to think of Dodger baseball without him, but inevitable. In the meantime, let’s get our guys out of their slump!!
I remember listening to Vin on the radio here in Tucson back in the 70s (back then, the Dodgers and the Padres were about all there was for local baseball coverage). Always thought he was one of the best announcers. Still feel that way.
I was lucky growing up in the Bay Area when Lon Simmons and Bill King were broadcasting for the Giants, A’s, 49ers and Raiders. Those two were true greats. But going to college in southern California gave me a chance to listen to Vin Scully calling games for the hated Dodgers. I still don’t like the Dodgers but Vin is the gold standard - it’ll be a sad day when there’s no longer even a possibility of him calling a Dodgers game.
Vin is the best kind of institution!
Oh, welcome to Free Republic! :-)
Listening to Vin call a Dodger game is akin to savoring a fine wine. He is the finest story teller and wordsmith ever grace us Dodger fans. No make that sports fans. He has no equal.
Me too...I can recall living in the San Fernando Valley when I was a girl in the early 60’s...we’d drive over to the beach during the summer and I can still vividly recall the hot wind (windows rolled down, no AC) and Vinnie’s voice on the radio. My two sons - now 29 and 25 - both grew up Dodger fans, listening to Vinnie just like I did.
Such a unique continuity between generations.
We will all miss him.
didn’t bill king do the san francisco warriors nba games in the 60’s when mullins, thurmond, barry etc were there? I think that was him, I lived up north then and once in a while I could get those games to come in.

Phillies lost their legendary broadcaster at the start of the season this hear - Harry Kalas. I have a harder time rooting for them, however.
