I just purchased a package of Peanut Butter M&M's that has led me to ponder three things:
- Why does the name M&M's contain an apostrophe-s?
- Why is the package Net weight 1.63 oz.? Maybe related to a metric measure you might suggest. Well they also list that at 46.2g. Why not 1.5 oz. or 50g?
- Why can't they balance the colors? There's always at least one under represented color. My package has 6 blue, 6 orange, 5 green, 4 brown, 3 yellow, and only 2 red.

“All color M&M’s are dumped in a hopper....”
I don’t actually know how the M&M’s are done, but I would bet they operate like the machines I used to use. Here it is in a nutshell: First, M&M’s are sold by weight. Let’s assume each color costs the same to make. (Although they probably don’t - I don’t know but I would guess you would have more of the cheaper colors in most packages.See my post at #60.) You have a multitude of small hoppers, each with varying amounts of M&M’s. Each hopper is individually weighed, and then the precise (or very close to it without being underweight) amount goes into the bag. It’s all controlled by computer and is very fast. The key here is this - each individual M&M’s weight is a little different, and I don’t want to give any M&M’s away, I want to sell them.

Sheetz has dispensers so you can choose just the colors you want. They have a variety of different colored green ones.

Why do some have a W printed on them instead?

Well, you're question implies a defect in the product, which led to product replacement. the_devils_advocate_666's questions implies a defect in the consum..... er, ummm, never mind.

It's more fun if you set up a tournament bracket beforehand and have friends bet on the winner.

Why do some have a W printed on them instead? Haliburton bought the Mars Candy Company. It's all part of Dick Cheney's master plan.

There are people who can tell the color of the M & M’s by taste alone... I find that rather strange, but true!
Just give me the ones with the nuts and I don’t care what color they are.... but what is it with these coconut M & M’s that is just WRONG!

...but ... but ... it’s TRUE! If you send the dominant M & M to Mars, they will send you a lovely letter and another bag
You have to give them the info - like how many battles, the ratio of colors, etc
BTW, my research has shown that the yellow is most often the winner

I am still trying to figure out why my cherry fruit pie only had one cherry in it.
While I am at it, those cup of soups tick me off too. I counted ONE shrimp in my cup of soup.

Back in the 80’s (and before we knew chocolate was bad for dogs), if given the choice between a red M&M and any other color M&M, our Doberman would always pick the red one.

I tried the new coconut M&M today. I love the mint ones, but can only find them around Christmas. Last year I didn't see them at all so hope they haven't discontinued them.
