VANCOUVER -- It wasn't a pretty sight, but whale watchers on a cruise ship in Canada got more than they bargained for when they arrived at the port of Vancouver -- a dead whale stuck to the bow.

The vessel apparently struck the 70-ton fin whale in the ocean and unknowingly carried it wedged to the bow from Alaskan waters to the Canadian port. The adult whale was an estimated 70 feet (21 meters) long.

The Princess Cruise Lines' Sapphire Princess was docked at the Canada Place terminal Saturday with the whale stuck to it.

"Basically like a train coming through, it just hits them. That bow is kind of like a spear. And once they're hit by it, it probably breaks their back, kills them almost instantly," Craig Delahunt of Tymac Launch Service told AP Television News.

Don’t bring a whale to a ship fight.

They should have gotten a clue when all the other cruise ships were honking and pointing

You would think that the drag would be pretty tremendous and the engine room would notice.

In respect of this event, I might just have to name my next homebrew “Impaled Whale Ale”.

its like hitting a cow with a train..... the laws of gross tonnage win.... and if you are big enough you might not feel it at all... but yeah how do you miss a 70 foot whale?

A seasoned captain has had to look at the wake off the bow for decades, how they missed the huge change in it is beyond me.

This same thing happened around 12-15 years ago to another cruise ship. I rememeber Rush reading the story and joking about it. Time to ban all cruise ships, if only one whale can be saved, its worth it.

What’s worse is the whale was en route to Ninevah with a passenger in tow.

There's a Guinness Harpoon joke there somewhere.
