Mickey Rooney was slowing down in 1939. After all, he would turn 19 in September. He only made six full-length movies this year, after eight in 1938.

Got to watch much of the Andy Hardy series this last year. I was shocked how serious some of this stuff was, after being told by all the drama snobs how much fluff it all is!

“Man in the Iron Mask” was just run on Turner. I watched a bit of it. I found it interesting that the first thing the good guy does when he get the power is lower taxes.

Looks like your are correct. From tcm.com:

M-G-M records state that the film cost $2,777,000 to produce, and that it grossed $3,017,000 in its first release. However, because of distribution and advertising costs, the film actually lost about a million dollars at the time and did not produce a profit until its re-release in 1948-49.

But I'll bet it was supposed to be a summer blockbuster.

The Andy Hardy series showcased some of the most talented newcomers and soon to be mega stars. Lana Turner, and Judy Garland being two of them. And even though these movies were made 20 years before I was even born, I had a crush on Ann Rutherford when seeing these old films on Saturday afternoon TV
